I'm using the multichannel output from a STR-DA5500ES into the 5000ES.
It works, but the infrared remote signal to 5500ES messes with the 5000ES even though I have the IR sensor on the 5000ES covered with two layers of gaffer tape!
The multichannel rca's are somehow passing info to the 5000ES. Is this even possible, or am I missing something?
There was a thread about using the STR-DA5000ES this way, but I couldn't find it.
Thanks in advance, Maurice.

What is gaffer tape? Is it totally opaque? No, there is no way that remote control info is passed to the STR-DA5000ES via the multi-channel inputs. Are these the only cables connected between your STR-DA5500ES and STR-DA5000ES? Nothing is connected to the receiver's CONTROL A1II or CONTROL S jacks?
Something that you might try is changing the receiver's command mode from AV2 to AV1 (or visa versa) as follows. This will change the set of IR commands that the receiver responds to.
On the Receiver: 1. Turn off receiver 2. Press and hold the INPUT button 3. Press the power button to toggle AV modes
You will need to perform the AMP REGIST operation again if you wish to continue using the STR-DA5000ES remote to change remotes mode to match the receiver.

Thanks for replying jehill, yes the tape is opaque. I did try to change the command mode of the 5000 but it wasn't responding. I'll try again.

The problem was trying to change the mode via the remote.
As per your suggestion, from the INPUT button, it worked a treat.
What volume setting would you suggest the 5000es be set at?
It's not a fixed level input like a regular power amp, so I have to guess
at something.
Thanks for the tips, much appreciated.

I would set the STR-DA5000ES volume control such that 0 dB on the STR-DA5500ES is at the maximum volume you intend to use. That way, you have a fine control of the volume. It really isn't all that important.
