Hello All, I have the heavyweight, fantastic five disc CDP-C79ES. It was purchased in 1993 and had a lot of use initially. Lately, I have noticed a 2-3 second lag of the display lighting up on a cold boot. After the initial cold boot, if I shut down and power back up, the display lights up instantly. Otherwise, the player performs flawlessly, as it has since I purchased it. Is the cold boot display lag a portent of worse things to come? All thoughts and experiences appreciated as always, Aiden

Aiden: i also have a C79ES & i'm having sorta the same issues as you.

When i turn the unit on there's a good 2-3 sec. delay before the display kicks in, but now i'm having other issues. The carousel will eject & come out to the desired selection but when i go to play the cd, the table just keeps searching like it loses direction. I'm hoping its just a table sensor or something? I've tried a new laser just in case that was the issue but it didn't help. These are really great units & well built & the rosewood sideburns always do it for me.
If you figure your issue out with your display just drop me a line & i'll do the same!

    John

Johnny, Has the unit sat for a prolonged period of time w/o use? Mine sat for months @ a time, maybe once or twice approaching 7-8 months. Once I started booting this up every day and either just letting it idle or playing discs for 8+ hours a day, everything is back to normal. It even still has the custom DSP files stored for discs. It is working fine. If you have been using your unit on a regular basis, but not every day, this still might be worth a try. I can tell you there is no shop out there that I have found that is competent or will even attempt to repair a vintage piece of AV equip. My TC-WA9ES has been back and forth to Sony's Repair Facility in Laredo TX. three times since October 2011, the second trip they fixed the original problem, but they caused a problem that was not there initially. Now it is still in Laredo, they have had the deck since 2/3/12 and no Dx yet.If you want to hear what they did to my deck, go to YouTube's Search box and type in "thesonyesfan", it will take you to my channel. There is only one video clip there, it runs less than 90 seconds. I am waiting for a service manual for C79ES to see hoe the unit stores data in memory, it may use a memory chip supplied with voltage when the unit is off by a battery, like the ancient 386 series PC's EPROMs. I'll let you know when I get the service manual. Take Care Johnny, AD

AD: mine was working flawlessly for months but as of late is again having display issues at start up & now all it is doin is lighting up the line out/phone level light, nothing more than that is working right now. Luckily, i picked up another C79ES for parts. It doesn't play cd's but the the front display comes on & works & functions as should. I hope to do a swap of the front display circuitry this weekn & get my minty C79ES back up & running. You don't realize how much you miss one of these players until one goes down & out of use! Did you find a service manual for the C79ES?

    AD:

Good news on the cold boot lag. I replaced the front circuitry from my parts C79ES to my mint girl & fired it up & everything works like clock work!!! Powers up immediately! I had issues with mine on the play button & pause as well. The top circuit ia all joined together & has to be replaced as one. My player started to only work by remote...all is cured now :-).

Keep the faith AD...hope you can find another that will have the same result for your C79ES!
