YOWZA! why did the price of S7700 jump up so much? I was going to recommend it as probably easier to find over the DVP-NC555ES but I don't know...

I am looking for a 5-disk DVD player with Progressive Scan.  HDMi-out and up-converting not nec. as I am sending these duties to my DA3300ES receiver.   Currently I am using a Pioneer ELITE C-36 and am looking for an upgrade to use in my dedicated theater room.  My projector is the Panasonic PT-AX200U.

    I am considering the DVP-S7700 and DVP-NC555ES.

I would also consider a Sony DVP-S9000ES despite it being 5-disk.

I am sure there are a ton of units I am overlooking.  Any thoughts?

Indeed they have, for its pricepoint I believe I will be sticking with my Pioneer ELITE. It appears as if I'll have to spend at least $300 to get equal performance for both video and audio in a 5-disk changer. I can notice no discernible difference between it and a stand-alone Marantz OSE CD player. From the reviews I've read unless I go with a single-disk player, there are not many viable Sony 5-disk DVD changers.

I am tempted by these 3 players.  I do not yet know enough about them to pull the trigger.

    DVP-S9000ES

    DVP-NC555ES

    DVP-S7700

    Your thoughts?

I can comment on the DVP-S9000ES.

Build: It is well built, not the best build quality ever, but it's very solid. Made in Japan, mostly copper plated chassis, and weighs nearly 30 pounds. However, the CD tray is completely plastic.

Playback: (other than what's mentioned below) It is quick to load discs and plays them quietly. I haven't had it skip/freeze or have any problems when watching a movie on it. Sound output is excellent. Video output is very good.

Annoyances: Mine is very finicky when attempting to read CD-Rs and if it does play them it will start to distort after about 60mins into the CD. It is also requires that some DVDs with significant scratches are very clean before it will play them. There is no way to put it into standby without using the remote. Only holds one disc.

Other notes: There are a pair of analog stereo outs, but no other analog audio outs. If you do end up choosing this one, there is a service menu which reveals the hours used for CDs and DVDs, it would be a good idea to ask the seller to give you that info.

I am in need of a SACD player as I have acquired a good selection of titles from a friend for a modest price.

Given that my Pioneer ELITE player will not play SACD and does not have multi-channel out I am looking for another player.

Of course I want a Sony, but I would consider others.

I do not necessarily need a 5-disk player or up-converting, but it would be nice. y up-converting duties will be done by my 3300ES receiver so its not necessary, but it wouldn't hurt to have.

I have narrowed it down to the following players, the prices are the approx. real world values as I've witnessed on Ebay and elsewhere in the past several months.

    Sony NC555ES>$100-$200
    Sony NS3100ES>$75-$150
    Sony NS9100ES>$300-$700

I would consider the NS999ES too, but some of the reviews I've read note that they are "finicky" when it comes to playing certain CD-Rs. These sell for $150-$300.

If I was to go the route of the NS9100ES, I have a 7100ES receiver available to utilize the DSD via the iLink connector. I can get the pair for $750 shipped. I have a NS9100ES available by itself for $300 shipped. Both are a little out of my price range, but if the performance is worth the added cost I would certainly consider it. Thanks in advance!!!

After much contemplation I decided on the NS555ES, mainly because it is a 5-disk player.   I know I can expect much more performance from the NS999ES or NS9100ES.  Based on the reviews it should perform just as well as the 3100ES despite not having up-converting capabilities.

I will report on my findings once I receive it.  I paid $150 shipped in MINT condition.

You could always mod the NS555ES to raise the performance up to or even higher than the NS999ES or NS9100ES.

Depending how much I like the player I may decide to mod it. However, I recently acquired a Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi that has ILINK capabilities along with the matching VSX-55TXi from a co-worker.
