I am setting up a 2 channel system in my living room and am trying todecide what to do for preamp/amp. I am currently using a NAD C355BEEintegrated amp (80 wpc) but I have the itch to try out vintage sony ES- namely the E80ES preamp and the N80es amp.
Speakers are NHT classic fours (6 ohm, relatively low sensitivity) of ~85 or so).
Has anyone compared similar systems? Does the old ES gear still compare well to new stuff?
Also, does anyone have any idea what a good price for the E80es or N80es is?

The ES line of amplifiers is discontinued, but Denon still make classic amps. The design is slightly improved, but if you take the cover of a 1997 Denon PMA-2000 amp and a new PMA2010E, you will practicality see the same parts.
I have a TA-F 707 ES witch is very good. The E80/N80 is slightly better and considerable more powerful.
The NAD have no chance. The Sony cost 6 times more and is an other league.
The price for a perfect combo is about 1000€ or 1200$

mhedges- Not only does the TA N80ES have that Classic Sony ES build quality, but with the TA E80ES as its Pure Analog Preamp it is great for very high quality Stereo Music playback and with 200 wpc it is capable of peeling the paint off of the walls even with your 85 db efficient NHT speakers should you want to impress your friends with what top of the line 1980's Sony ES Audio equipment still sounds like.

Thanks for the responses. I just ordered the amp and preamp. I got them for $765 shipped which I figure is a fair price. The amp has some minor cosmetic flaws but that doesn't really bother me.
I will post some pics and impressions after I get it set up and broken in.

I recieved the preamp today. Man the thing looks sweet and feels so solid. The downer is that I won't get the amp till tuesday, and with it being so cold out I probably will not power it up till wednesday.
I noticed the preamp has a connection for a ribbon cable labeled Control S. Does this do anything? What other components make use of this?

Hi,
The Control S cable will allow you to change radio stations on an "S" equipped Sony tuner using your Pre-Amp remote. There might be other uses for the S cable besides this...
