My VGN-A790 laptap was working fine then suddenly it won't turn on. No beeps or lights or sounds or nothing. The light on the ac adapter does light up when plugged in. Doesn't power up even when the port replicator which connects to the laptop from another place. Any ideas please?

Hi fasteddie717,
Below are the instructions if the VGN-A790 Laptop doesn't turn on

Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.

If the DC jack on the computer is loose or damaged, the computer may require service. Some AC adapters have a POWER LED indicator and can be confirmed as receiving power by ensuring the LED is lit. If the AC adapter is damaged or the LED is not lit when plugged into a working AC outlet, the adapter must be replaced. A replacement AC adapter can be obtained from the Sony® Direct Accessories and Parts Center Web site or by calling (800) 488-7669. Attempt to turn on the computer. Press and hold the Power Switch for 15 seconds. Attempt to turn on the computer. Remove the battery. Disconnect the AC power adapter. Press and hold the Power Switch for 15 seconds. Connect the AC power adapter. Attempt to turn on the computer. NOTE: If the computer turns on without the battery, connect and charge the battery for 24 hours.
Disconnect all external devices that are connected to the computer. NOTE: These devices include, but are not limited to, a modem, floppy disk drive, network connection, USB device, printer, keyboard, or mouse. Attempt to turn on the computer. Remove any additional Random Access Memory (RAM) that was installed in the computer. Attempt to turn on the computer. NOTES: The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required. The Sony® eService Web site at http://eservice.sony.com/ can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer. When shipping the computer for repair, include all notes of the LED status that displayed during troubleshooting. Region

Let me know if this solution worked? I know that some other members have had this issue on other models.

Hi fasteddie717, from the description of the problem and the fact that after you tried troubleshooting steps posted here the issue still persists it seems like service will be required. Unless you have parts to replace opening the computer may do no good.
If you have a multimeter you can check the output of the AC adapter to verify you are getting a clean signal and if not replace the AC adapter.
Other than that I suggest calling Sony @ 888-476-6972 or going to http://eservice.sony.com both within the USA to setup the computer for service.

Thanks John. Well I opened her up already just to take a look. Some times things come lose or tear. I didn't see any thing out of the norm. I may have to take every thing apart to do a better inspection. Last resort, I will call Sony. You mentioned checking the AC adapter for a clean signal. Now, the LED on the AC adapter lights up green when plugged to a receptical. Does that mean it's ok, or can it still be damaged? I have no multi meter, but if it is worth it I will buy one. Thanks....

The light being lit on the AC adapter does not mean 100% that its not failing. Checking with a multimeter that the output is constant is one way to check it if you have the tools available. This AC adapter the AC19V7 should have an output of 19.5 V. Using a voltmeter/multimeter you can see if the output is constant or if it fluctuates.
Also is this the original Sony AC adapter or one purchased at a local store/online?

Yes this is the original AC adapter. I wish it was only the AC adapter. I'm going to check it out. Thanks.
