Hello,
I'm a HW newbie, so forgive me if this is obvious. I have a Sony VAIO VGC-RA840G that has power supply Delta DPS-400LB A Rev 04. The power supply says it takes input 100-240V, 47-63Hz. These ranges would work in both the US (where I bought it) and the UK, where I am now. Often, computer power supplies have a switch you must flip to change their voltage tolerance. There is not an obvious external switch on this power supply, and taking it out of the computer to open it up and look for one looks quite challenging given the chassis design.
My question is, do any of you know this power supply well enough to know if there is an internal switch I must flip to run it at 240V, or should I just be able to plug it in without modification? I hesitate because Sony added a plastic plate to the back of the computer that says it only works on 100-120V, which is the US power spec.
I tried to find more detailed specs on the power supply itself that might clear things up, but I couldn't find anything. Thanks for any advice.

Sarah,
Greetings and welcome. Sorry to say that I don't know if the Delta DPS-400LB A Rev 04 power supply is capable of handling the 240V power that you have in the UK. I am very familiar with the switchable power supplies that can work for both voltages but after a pretty thorough internet search I didn't find anywhere that said that the Delta DPS-400LB A Rev 04 has this feature.
I think you are wise not to attempt using it with 240V especially since Sony has taken the steps to add a plastic plate saying that it only works on 100-120V. Have you tried to contact Sony in regards to this question?
Until you know for sure it might be prudent to invest in a power converter like so many other forum members that have purchased components in the U.S. for use across the pond.
BTW, in doing a search I did find your post at Hardware Analysis, hopefully someone will reply.

Sarah,
Please do post back if you can find out if the power supply is switchable. As you mention, it may be helpful to another forum member.
If you can just plug it in won't you also need an adapter for the power cord as well?

I figured that posting on both a Sony-specific forum and a HW forum would hopefully cover the bases and get a response from someone in the know! =) I haven't tried to contact Sony, but I can certainly give that a shot. I'll post whatever I find out from asking in a variety of places here in case anyone else ends up in the same boat. I just wish I could find the spec for that power supply. I know some are auto-switching between voltages and some have a manual switch. It would be nice to know which camp I'm in!
I'm hoping Sony put the placard on the back as it would for any US appliance without attention to the actual capabilities. At least that's what I'm hoping. Buying a transformer capable of 840W (I think that's what it would need?) is not cheap in the UK, so I'm hoping I can just plug it in. =)
