I think I will be buying a Sony dvpns9100es, are there any known isssues? Is the layer change quicker, and does it do "blacker than black "?

Hi Fanboyz.
I own DVP-NS9100ES and I can tell you that it's hell of a player!
You can say that it's high-end CD/SACD player with added first-class DVD playback and i.Link connectivity.(especially if you have i.Link compatible receiver)
I don't know of any issues re this player.
Mine 9100ES changes layers very fast, does "blacker than black ", and does excellent upscalling of Standard Definition DVDs.
What do you need more?

fanboyz- I am sure that you will find the NS9100ES is a fantastic Player for both Audio and Video just like so many of the other NS9100ES owners here at Agoraquest who like Danijel have nothing but praise for its capabilities.

I don't have any issues with my 9100ES, but maybe others have.

I'll give it a 9.9 out of 10 for sure.
I'll deduct the .1 because unlike my 7100ES, when you dim the display completely it doesn't turn on automatically when you use a button.
Other than that, all good. Not a single issue at all.

Lyle -That's because display on the player goes off completely, unlike on the receiver, where display goes to stand-by.
I have my old DVP-NS900V who have FL ON/OFF switch on remote, so I learned my DA7100ES's remote that command and it works for my NS9100ES, so I presume it's universal for Sony dvd players. This way you can have FL ON/OFF switch for your NS9100ES on your remote.

got my black 9100es, she is the best DVD drive in human creation. Sorry it took forever to reply... I think I was not burning my software right, the SONY CD that I received within 5 business days worked just like the instructions stated.
If I ever get a new TV, I am sure I will not be having problems.

I agree, that sure would be a nice feature. Although I don't remember any of my Sony DVD players ever having that feature.

Here is a funny thing about the NS9100ES. For the 1 year I have had the unit, I have watched less than ten movies on it...most of the time I am listening to my XA777ES.
This is how I can describe it...after removing a disc from the player, the CD/DVD smells brand new...if you know what I mean....the smell of a brand new machine. ----------------- It All Depends

I recently replaced my 9000ES with the 9100ES but have found no noticeable improvement in the picture quality when playiny DVDs. This is contrary to my expectations since the new player can upconvert. Is this normal or have I missed doing something? My TV is the LCD rear projection KF-42WE620 with DVI input. Cable used is Monster Cable HDMI-DVI.

I have a similar connection as yours and I would say the picture is phenomenon, you need to;
1- Check the DVD's resolution output... mine is @ 1080i
2- Check with your TV manual about its maximum resolution. If it's 480P, then there will be no noticeable difference, 720P on up, you should see a difference... I can almost bet.
The 9000 that you replaced was a fine player but the NS9100 with its HDMI output.... ----------------- It All Depends

Thanks for your reply. Under Specifications in the TV manual, there is no mention of the resolution(which I find irritating even before this). Next to the DVI input jack at the back of the TV, though, there is a sticker saying 1080i,720p,etc., so I assume that's the TV's resolution. I'm not sure what you mean by the DVD's output resolution(your first point) and would be happy to hear your clarification. If you mean the HDMI resolution under "Settings for the Display" in the 9100 manual, I have tried both Auto and 720x480.

The 720 by 480 will not realize a better picture. You need to go into the video menu again and instead of the 720X480, choose the 1920X1080i....
The 480 is progressive, just what about any other DVD can do. The 1280X720p and the 1920X1080i are the up-converted signals... HD uses the last two and the new 1080P.
In short, choose the 1920X1080i on your DVD Video menu. Let us know if you are successful in doing so.... also, please report back with the video quality. ----------------- It All Depends

Tried that but sorry to say that there is no difference. I wonder if the TV's DVI input(not being HDMI and therefore no upconversion) has anything to do with it.

I agree, the DVI isn't the problem.
Check the player's HDMI resolution setting to be sure that it's not set to 720x480p. If it is, try one of the other settings like AUTO.

My TV has a DVI input and the NS does not disable the output of the 1080i signal...I don't think the DVI is the issue.
I agree with the first point though that the TV might have a good scaler like the DVD itself ----------------- It All Depends

Try this... connect your TV using both HDMI and component cables... make sure the component is set at 480p and the HDMI resolution is at 1080i, if there is no difference in picture quality, then your TV's scaler is very GOOD.....

This is an interesting notion, that my TV, an obsolete Sony model, may have a very good scaler. Picture quality from HDMI-DVI and component video outputs look the same to me. Another thing worthy of note is that I find HD TV quality, which is vastly superior to standard TV especially in sports programs, to be better than that from DVDs. Does that mean that I won't benefit from upconversion?
