I have been listiening to a few SACD sample discs on my PS3 and I love the 5.1 at 172khz, but one question.
Did SACD fail?
I mean Best buy has like Three for sale, Amazon has Like 120, and I suppose thats better than DVD-A.
I mean sony sony format went tits up and thats okay, Im sure all us sonyphiles knew where UMD was headed from the start.
Im not much of a music dude, All my purchased music comes from Itunes so what I mean to say is....
Does SACD have a future or is it just an audiophile niche thing.

fanboyz,
1. You are lucky that your Best Buy has three SACDs for sale. When I got the SACD portion of my DVD/SACD player connected I went to Best Buy in search of a few SACDs to purchase. I asked the gentleman working in that department; "Where are the SACDs located?" and he replied, "What is an SACD?" LOL.......
2. I sure hope so, I have really enjoyed my first SACD and surely will buy more!

Steve Hoffman (L) and Kevin Grey at the AcousTech Mastering Console
We can understand more about the future of SACD as we get closer to the source.
I had the rare opportunity of meeting legendary Mastering Engineer Steve Hoffman at a local Audio shop a few weeks ago and when I asked him about the future of SACD he had this to say...
"The problem is that since Sony cut off SACD funding everything has dried up and no one calls me anymore for SACD work".
This is where the SACD shortage begins.

Gaday fanboyz, You just have to look in the right places, here's my first site i used to buy SACD's from :- http://www.mediapitstop.com/search.aspx?SearchTerm=sacd "yes" that's right over 2,500 titles and still kicking ,great site great people bought my first 10 SACD's from them a few years back when they had 1,000 titles ,a little on the expensive side to OZ so i now buy from numerous outlets www.cduniverse.com www.musicdirect.com www.artistdirect.com and compare prices ,even ebay get some SACD's on it at a bargain price if you now the title your after . Interesting my last HIREZ purchase was a DVD-A by Donald Fagen,I mentioned once before on another thread that DVD-A's seem to be more plentifull (avaliable)now since Sony stopped there SACD funding to the independant engineers as Maxx just stated .I didn't check mediapitstop but they used to have a huge collection of DVD-A's also.
Happy SACD shopping guys ! Theres alot of Classical music listed at mediapitstop Toli!
cheers maverick

The truly sad part about Sony cutting funding to the independant Audio engineers is that it keeps legendary Mastering Engineers like Doug Sax and Steve Hoffman from continuing to put out what many Hi Rez Music Fans consider to be some of the best sounding SACD's ever made.

Maxx,
I am a big fan of several composers, of which Beethoven is probably my favorite. I haven't had alot of time to look through all the selections, as there are many, but the following two caught my eye:
http://www.mediapitstop.com/ps-1274-5-beethovenlv-complete-symphonies-sacd.aspx
http://www.mediapitstop.com/ps-64887-5-beethovenlv-complete-works-for-solo-piano-vol-1-sacd.aspx

Toli- The Complete Symphonies of Beethoven on SACD for under $50 is a real bargain. I've see the same set sell for almost $100! The only thing better than great Music is getting it at a steep discount.
I say that because I once bought some works for String Quartet composed by Romanus Hoffstetter on CD for $2.50 and to me it has always sounded a little sweeter because it was such a bargain and to this day it remains one of my very favorites.

G'day Toli, It's a great site as I mentioned ,really nice people and a huge selection *Thousands of SACD's". I've been purchasing SACD's and DVD-A's like crazy laterly because their prices have dropped but mainly on ebay.com. One SACD from a group called WEATHER REPORT titled Heavy Weather cost $16AUD(still waiting for that one in the mail),3 DVD-A's Eagle's Hotel California $15AUD,Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells $15AUD and Santana's Shaman $16AUD .The last three arrived two days back and I'm over the moon.Santana's "Shamana" (his last album a couple of years old)and Mike OldfieldsTubular Bells is pushing my newly crossover modded ,rewired ,resonance coned rear towers to their limits and then I can't decide which sounds better on Hotel California ,192khz/24bit stereo(the original) or 96khz/24bit multi. I'm just having a hoot buying cheap Hi Rez. I've also purchased two Red book CD's today of ebay waiting to see if i like them enough before commiting to purchase an SACD which is also avaliable , LEONARD BERNSTEIN - RHAPSODY IN BLUE/ON THE TOWN - CD and GERSHWIN - RHAPSODY IN BLUE/AMERICAN IN PARIS- CD(artist unknown),they only cost me 99cents each , $9.00 AUD each with postage from ebay in the States. Great to hear your enjoying yourself with Beethoven on SACD I'm slowly moving in your's and Maxx's direction as well with orchestral music.Who knows i might be a convert ! but I'll always like my Rock,Jazz and Blues as well.
cheers Mav Rick.

Rick- Being a Musician you are probably already aware of this, but what really closed the gap between Baroque/Classical and Rock Music for me as a Musician myself was when I was watching a documentary on Rock Music and they segued from a Bach keyboard composition into Eddie Van Halen playing an almost identical riff on his electric guitar and it was at that moment that I realized that both pieces of Music came from the same Musical Model.
I also read another interview where Eddie Van Halen discussed how he grew up learning to play Classical Music on the piano and how deeply that Music influenced his guitar playing.
Growing up in the 1960's I became a big fan of the blazing guitar riffs and electric keyboard laden Rock Music of the time. These days when I listen to the String Quartets and Violin Concertos of Classical Composers like Haydn and his students Mozart and Beethoven I am able to enjoy the complexities and the intricasies of the original Classical Music Template as it evolved from the Music that the Baroque Composers like Bach and the incomparable Vivaldi who had gone before them and how clearly that Musical Template is still being used today.
When I realized that there is a common Musical Template that much of the Music that has been created over the last 300 years has in common it helped me to relate to and appreciate the older Music that I was originally less familiar with.

G'day Toli, Who knows after listening and loving my Linn SACD "Selektion of Linns Favourites" for a while now which has Handel's Sonata in Bp major,Beethoven's The tempest Sonata,Mozart's Requiem in D minor and Ravel's Petite Synphonie I'm definitley converted ,I just have to start learning about the Artisits and discovering their music.
That SACD of Beethoven's complete works at mediapitstop sounds like a bargain.
Have fun! cheers Maverick.

G'day Maxx, Sorry mate wish I was a Musician ,no I'm just a humble Music lover starting to discover Orchestral music again. My sister is the musician she plays a remarkable Flute and piano ,she played at the conservatorium of music in Sydney as a youngster so I am familar with some orchestral music. Brainwashed into me from being in the same house ,ajoining bedrooms growing up. Vivaldi has been a favourite of mine for along time as i've probably previously mentioned to you before too .Your George Gershwin as I mentioned has some incredible music composed last centuary ,is their anything i should look for in his music selection ?
cheers maverick.

Rick- As I type this I am listening to an FM Radio presentation of the Amsterdam Guitar Trio playing "Summer" from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons on my recently Modified Carver TX-11 FM Tuner and its got me so teared up that its difficult to see the screen clearly so please bear with me.
Sorry its taken me so long to reply, but I've spent a lot of time cleaning the electrical contacts in my A/V System over the last couple of days and carefully evaluating the results so that I can share them with Ian over in the DIY section.
As for your question about the Music of Gershwin I can't make any recommendations as to which selections of his Music are outstanding because I don't own any.
I blame my interest in Baroque and Classical Music squarely on my ultra low jitter Digital Front End because it is the only Music that I have found that can challenge it in the extreme and bring out its absolute best performance with this Music's ultra complex Harmonic Structure which the early Composers were so expert at creating which could enliven every single molecule of air in the room and coax them into doing their bidding.
In order to be able to accomplish this Franz Joseph Haydn spent as much as 1 month writing just 1 minute of Music and the results of this intense creative effort can still be heard and enjoyed in his Music and in the forms of Music which he invented which are the String Quartet and the structure of modern Symphony.
Every time I go to the Music store I'm amazed by the wealth of different
varieties of great Music that are available. There is definately enough opportunity for everyone to find the selelections that will give them chills and thrills for years!

...first time posting
I have been using my Oppo DV-981HD to play SACDs... I was amazed the other day when I manually enabled all audio output resolutions on my PS3 (via HDMI) and put my new Genesis Duke SACD in. Perfect!!!!!!!! 5.1 176KHz!!! All my difficulties in trying to balance the output of the Oppo and the incredibly annoying sibilance coming I assume from the down-rez was gone.
Now if only I could get the same kind of digital output for my DVD-As I'd be a happy man.
Any suggestions on a player that can ply hi-rez DVD-A with all digital output...?

G'day Brett, hope your still on Agora only just read your post from last month. Sounds like you've just discover the addiction of uncompressed HIREZ Audio .Unfortunately Sony only ever produced SACD players and not universal players like many of the other manufactures did.Their are quite a few bargains around for universal players that are SACD and DVD-A playable . I can vouch for my Denon 3910 which is now a few years old and half the price on audiogon and ebay. Maverick.

Well, that depends on the five millions or so owners of 20/60/80GB PS3 consoles that can play SACD. If they all unite on a site like this or, rather more dedicated to the cause, http://www.ps3sacd.com it could definitely become more than a niche!

I made sure to read all the posts before posting mine...if you want a great selection of SACDs... check this website out... http://store.acousticsounds.com/sacd.cfm... I think these guys have almost every SACD ever manufactured (imports & domestic) This is where I buy all my SACDs.
Regarding Best Buy and Circuit City, no one seems to know what an SACD is...what a pity!!!
Hope the above link helps you find what you are looking for...they also carry other equipment...everything audio. ----------------- It All Depends

G'day tcgalo, Your right acoustic sounds is a great site and they've been around for along time ,i've been getting their news letters for years. They were always a little dearer than the other sites , but a good back up reference because of their huge collection. From memory the other one i mentioned on this post www.mediapitstop.com also http://www.mediapitstop.com/s-5-sacd.aspx had similar libary of SACD's. These days I mainly buy from ebay, there are so many more titles and so many cheap SACD and CD this year buying second hand and new.Once i find a title at "acoustic sounds" or "mediapitstop" I ebay search or google it for the cheapest buy.
SACD Bargain shopping! Mav'
