Quick update...I got the HR20 yesterday the DA3100ES today and spent about 3 hours getting everything wired in...so far so good, the HD DVR is giving me a little trouble with some settings but it looks awesome when everything is working correctly.

The 3100ES hasn't blown me away yet but I still have to tweak all the settings and I haven't been able to listen at very high levels since the wife went to bed before I finished getting it all ready to go.

Hopefully by this weekend I'll flood this forum with questions about my new toy and have a photo of most of my H/T

Given the choice which would you choose and why? They can both be picked up for about the same price right now, the 3100ES a little less sometimes on ebay, Crutchfield has the DG1000 for ~$625.00

I'm more interested in the audio functions vs. video, I don't care much about HDMI switching...but I might in the future. So far everything plugs into the HDTV so I only run the audio through the receiver for now....

I know the warranty is only two years, but is the build quality close to ES levels on the DG1000?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Rob- The STR DA3100ES has the same build quality as the traditional Sony ES series Receivers like the DA4ES and DA7ES which is why it weighs in at around 46 pounds as they do.

What this means is that the DA3100ES has the traditional Sony ES Power Supply which is able of driving its discreet ampifiers to paster crackingly loud volumes if called upon to do so.

The new series of Sony Receivers like the DG1000 leans more toward Video sophistication and away from the Audio capabilities of its predacessors with their the meaty beefy build quality and huge power supplies.

Thanks Maxx, that just confirms that the 3100ES is the one for me...now just to find one from a reputible dealer at a good price! Got any ideas?

    robncindi,

Of the two receivers, the STR-DA3100ES would have been my choice as well. Please post back and let us know how well you like it. Are you opting for the silver or the black version? I think that they are both sharp, I ask only out of curiosity.

Thanks Toli, I am searching for a black one...seems all the ones on ebay are black so that is good but I hope to find one locally at a similar price. Hopefully I'll have one in hand in the next 2-3 weeks.

All the other equipment except for my Tosiba TV and D* Tivo is black and one day I'd like to get everything in the HT setup 'Back in Black'

On a side note Diretv has a really sharp looking HR20 HD DVR on their website but no one knows if it is shipping yet. I just ordered a new one, I'd love it arrived in the new design!

    robncindi,

I hope that you get your DA3100ES soon. I also have all black components, although both silver and black look sharp, I really like to match color if possible.

You listed in your Agoraquest profile that you live in Lake Conroe, TX, is this the same or the same area as Conroe, TX? If so, there is a Sony Style store in Houston and it would be an excellent place to get your DA3100ES! The ES receivers will come with thier full 5 year ES warranty. Just click here for the locations of all the Sony Style stores, there are several others in Texas as well.

I have two of the DIRECTV H20 receivers and they are great. I have recently ordered the new HD DVR in it's newly released black color. it looks awesome, I can't wait to get it home!

Yes, Conroe and Lake Conroe are one in the same

I'll be calling the Sony store in Housotn to see if they have any 3100's in stock. They don't show any online but maybe they have some old stock hanging around. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!

I just ordered our HR20 DVR on Christmas and it will be installed on Jan 10th, can't wait! I sure hope it comes in that new black model, that looks too cool!

Toli, do you plan or did you know that you can network the new HD20 to play music and photos from your computer across a wireless network?
I've been reading about how to do this for the past couple of days, it seems like a sweet solution to playing mp3's and veiwing photos across the wireless network from several different computers (kids room, office etc), hopefully it will support video and internet before too long also!

    robncindi,

If you really want the black HD DVR, you had better call DIRECTV right now and insist on it. Although in doing so, you may delay your installation date. The new HD DVR is available in both silver and black and to be sure of the black model, you have to request it.

    robncindi,

Although I like electronics and I have a digital camera, I never owned an mp3 player. But, my boss is giving me a video iPod, so I will have to look into this a little more. It really does sound cool, and it will be interesting to try.

Ouch, all the have at the Sony Store is a display model and they want $1000 for it...and maybe a "little discount" if I drive down there today. I'd want at least $400 off to make it worth buying there vs. ebay...is that unreasonalble?

Calling D* now to make sure I get the black model

    robncindi,

The DA3100ES is is nice, but you don't have to pay $1,000.00 for it. Check out www.mydigitaluniverse.com. They have a great reputation here and have the STR-DA3100ES for $593.00 plus tax and shipping. I don't know if they have the black model, but you can call them at (800) 266-4714 and ask.

Yeah, I've seen them online for this price several places, I think I'll print that out and see if they will give me the display model for <$500, if not I'll order it online.

    Thanks!

    robncindi,

For about the same money, I would prefer the new unit over the display model, but that's just my $0.02. Best of luck!

Yea, I am pretty picky about my stuff and a display model isn't my ideal..I like only my own fingerprints on my stuff! So, I am going to place an order today from mydidgitaluniverse.com

I'll let you know how that goes when I get it! Can't wait!!! I think I got the new black D* HD20 on order...they sort of gave me a run around about it though...we shall see!

Our local Sony Only Store has exactly the same policy of selling discontinued items for a razor thin discount.
I'm sure you will get a much better price on a NIB black DA3100ES at mydigitaluniverse.com.

    robncindi,

They tried telling me the same thing to me, like receiving a black HD DVR could only be by luck, as if I were drawing straws. What I am going to do is when the installer calls, I will verify that he has the black HD DVR with him. If he doesn't, I will contact DIRECTV again and setup another date while stressing my desire for a black HD DVR. Although, I am hoping that it won't be a problem as the black is the newest version to date and shouldn't be in shortage yet (I say this with my fingers crossed!) .

    mikeyw,

The new DIRECTV HD DVR looks so cool in black, and as soon as I get my NS9100ES home, my whole system will be black, COOL!! I am excited.

The HD DVR required a two year commitment and a $99.00 charge. The monthly lease fee is the same as always, $4.99. There is also a delivery charge of, I believe it is $20.00.

I think that there may be a couple of new channels, but I really haven't payed much attention. I know that the NFL Network in HD is pretty recent.

$99? Did you swap out another device? I had to pay $199 with zero delivery or install charges. D* is so inconsistant on their retention policies, drives me crazy!

The new HD20 DVR looks to be pretty promising, there are some good reviews on it at dbstalk.com if you want to know more.

Update on the 3100ES, I had to hold off until after the 1st to place an order...tuition was due so I shold be getting it sometime mid Jan. I'll be keeping an eye out for deals though

    robncindi,

    1. Yes, well sort of. I am replacing a Sony SAT-HD300 HD receiver, but it's not a swap, I own it. The charge may be less because I am on the A-List, but I am not sure of that.

    2. Oh yeah, it definately looks pretty cool. I have two DIRECTV H20 receivers as well.

    3. I can definately understand that situation. We just bought a new house, and I have to wait for my new DVP-NS9100ES DVD player, but it will be at least another month. I am feeling very antsy about now.......

    Maxx,

Actually I haven't found one, but I have been thinking about it and I do want one that rises above the quality of the standard OEM fare. Do you have any recommendations?

Toli- I had a lenghty discussion with Dan Wright one day about the benefits of using high purity Fine Silver wires in Teflon Dielectric for Digital signal transmission and I am of the opinion that a Silver/Teflon iLink wire would fantastic sounding!

I'm presently working on finding someone who would be interested in building a high quality Silver/Teflon ilink interconnect.

    Maxx,

That sounds fantastic! I assume that you will let us know when/if you find that person. The DVP-NS9100ES doesn't include an i-Link cable. I thought I had one from an older piece of Sony gear, but I can't locate it since the move. If nothing else, I know I can pick one up cheap on eBay, just until I can find a better one like you describe.

I had a 3100ES briefly before I sold it.  It is a superb..one of the best bangs for the buck out there.  It is basically the 7ES with a different face plate and only one multichannel input. If it has all the features and connectivity you need, I wouldn't hesitate in the slightest to get one, especially for $600 shipped from ebay.

I haven't got the new box yet. I hope that it won't be much longer.

The cable is awesome. I can't wait to use it with the new box.

    robncindi,

I am jealous, you only have to wait five more days for your DVR! I assume that you will be getting the silver DVR to match your new DA3100ES, is that right? I have been waiting a month so far for my new DVR, how long have you been waiting?

Also, Stuart has his 1M glass toslinks back up on eBay now.

30M hz Bandwidth Glass Toslink has 500% more bandwidth than standard plastic conductor Optical Toslink which will translate into a noticable improvement in sound quality.

In a side by side comparison in my Digital front end this $600 Marigo Apparition Reference Mk2 Digital Coax could not render nearly as much ultra fine sparkling detail as my 30M hz Bandwidth Glass Toslink does.

I just remembered that you said this, but when you said that the Sony store had it for $1000, were you referring to the 3100ES? When I stopped at our local Sony store, thier price was about $399, if I remember correctly.

Don't tell me that! Yes the 3100ES, $399 would be a steal! I think, everything I can find says it retailed around $1000

Going from a mid '90's DE range Pro Logic Receiver to a Dolby Digital and DTS Decoder Loaded Sony ES Receiver with the Glass Toslink in place will be roughly equivalent to removing earplugs from your ears.

Maxx, I assume I need an SPL meter to get the best sound...what is the procedure I would follow to setting the levels of the speakers? I'm going to buy a meter today.

I have the Avia home theater disc but I have never used the audio portion of it, only the video setup. But I'm sure it requires some sort of spl meter or something to calibrate the speakers also.

Only thing I noticed last night that was bothering me was not much of anything was coming from the surronds, I even cranked the level up to +10 and tried all of the cinema surrond settings but nothing compared to what I am used to getting...must be something not set right. I guess I'll figure that out this weekend...it might have been that I was watching directv and the signal wasn't 5.1...but it should have been. A dvd tonight should let me know if everything is working there.

The Center channel and the subwoofer are much crisper and more precise...punchy bass coming from my 12" sub as compared to the old receiver...why would that make a difference since the bass has its own 625 watt amp on board?

Anyhow, enough for now...this day at work is going to be looooong since all I want to do is go home and play with my new toys

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi Rob...

Maxx is right...Setup is crucial to a good sounding system....

Have you used the auto calibration feature with the microphone and...

Have you familiarised yourself with the menu options of the 3100 ?

If you have tried auto setup...can you tell us what it came up with for settings ?

Yes...You will need a SPL meter to use the audio portion of Avia...
But one thing I feel about calibration discs (I own Avia & Digital Video Essentials) is that they are great if you only want to listen/watch stuff from the player that you run the disc in....

I come up with different settings when I use the internal tones, and those settings seem to work out better for me when playing multiple sources....

When you do get the meter...It will be interesting to know how the auto setup compares to manual....That's why I ask about it and what it came up with....

For us to help more with manual setup we will need to know more about your speaker specs IE: Response figures and -3db points of all....

Thanks Steve, Here is my current speaker setup altought this may change soon, I'll assume I am keeping them for at least another year.

    Fronts: Klipsch RB-25

    frequency response 49Hz-20kHz ±3dB

    power handling 75 w max continuous (300 w peak)

    sensitivity 94dB @ 2.83 volts/1 meter

    crossover frequency 2670Hz

    Center: Klipsch RC-35

    frequency response 56Hz-20kHz ±3dB

    power handling 125 w max continuous (500 w peak)

    sensitivity 96dB @ 2.83 volts/1 meter
    crossover frequency HF: 2100Hz - LF: 300Hz

    Subwoofer: Klipsch RW-12
    frequency response 21-120Hz ±3dB
power handling FTC Rated Power: 340 watts continuous @ <2% THD/Dynamic Power*: 825 watts / *Dynamic power indicates the actual power this amplifier will deliver to the woofer under normal operating conditions
    max continuous output 113dB @ 30Hz 1/8 space, 1 meter
low pass crossover Continuously variable from 40-120Hz, 24dB/octave slope above 120Hz woofer K-1134-O 12" (30.48cm) Cerametallic® cone, steel frame - amplifier BASH® digital hybrid

    Surrounds: Klipsch Quintets

For now all I have are some small Klipsch Quintets that have been ok but I need to get something better. Problem is the only place to put them is behind the sofa and the wife wants to make sure they aren’t covering the art…so I may opt to go with some ceiling mounted speakers instead, there are also no side walls to mount speakers…Looking for some RCR-5's or RCR-3's to match the rest of my speakers.

I know they are not optimal but since the H/T setup is in our main great room and we don’t have any separate H/T room I have to keep things Aesthetically pleasing for the better half!

    Rob

    Thats Great Rob....

I take it you are at work now so I guess you can't tell me what crossover settings you or the receiver has setup...

So right now I can only ask if you have tried the automatic setup ?

Also...I'm not familiar with Quintets...or their response figures, but I could see them throwing a wrench into the automatic thing if they won't go very low...which I suspect is true ?

Yes, I am at work right now so I don't know what the crossover settings are.

What I did last night was reset everything on the receiver so I could start fresh, previous owner had all speakers set to small. Then I ran the speaker setup and set all the speakers to Large, made sure I got turned the sub on and then sorta guessed through the distances etc.

I don't remember seeing anywhere to set the crossover so that might be where my problem lies right now. I just downloaded the manual and am printing it now so I'll read through it again and see if there are any steps I don't understand before I head home tonight.

Here are the quintet speaker specs: Your right, they don't go very low...so this will be a problem I assume? New Rear Speakers will probably be on order very soon!

    I'm sorry Rob....

I was thinking you had the 3200ES which has a Auto calibration feature....You have the 3100 that does not....Again my apologies....

Yes... The Quintets @ 100hz do kinda limit you because as I understand the 3100 only has one crossover setting for All speakers set to Small....It will tell you where to set it in the manual....

Ok...Knowing what we know now...Here are a few suggestions to try...

First I would try setting the Front mains and Center to Large and the Surrounds to Small with the crossover in the 3100 to 100hz....Then set the crossover on the sub itself to around 100hz as well....Then do a level calibration with your new SPL meter and the 3100's internal test tones...

You will need to re-calibrate every time you change crossover settings as each change will affect levels...So getting familiar with doing so is the first step...and here is how I would go about it....

First set the RS meter to C weighting & Slow response....

Your test tones in the receiver should allow you to choose Fix or Auto...The difference being Fix will not rotate around the room automatically like Auto...thus will give you time to read your meter, make the level setting....and move on to the next speaker manually.

Start with the Front Left and set it to 75db with the Master volume control....then skip the tone around to the Sub and set it the same(with the Level setting in the Receiver's setup menu)...The reason for this is it's level will affect all the others due to the redirection of bass inside the receiver and every change of crossover will affect it's level as well....

After setting the Sub....go back a set all the other speakers in your system at 75db as well (With balance and level settings in the receiver setup menu)....Done for now...Listen to the system....

Now if you want to try some other setup options you know what is needed.....

Another crossover setup option would be to.....

    Set the Mains Large...
    Center Small....
    Surrounds Small...
    Receiver crossover...60hz
Sub crossover...Off...or as high as it will go
    Recalibrate...Listen....

    Another.....

    All speakers to Small...
Receiver @ 50-60hz....To match the Mains or Center
    Sub...Crossover off..or ATW up
    Recalibrate....Listen.....

    Another.....

    All Small...
Receiver @ 100hz...To match the surrounds
    etc....etc....

As you see...The options are many and I haven't listed all but only you can tell what you like the best by listening.....It's what works for you in your room....Once you are familiar with the concept...The options increase and are there for your tinkering....

I will say that you might expect much better performance with Surrounds that more closely match the low end response figures of your Center and Mains....then the Receiver setting could be set Small for ALL at say 60 Hz...and timbre (tone) would be fairly uniform around the room....

Hope all this Helps....Have Fun and Enjoy
Let us know what you end up with....

Great information Steve! I got a sound level meter from the Health and safety department at work and am ready to head home and start tinkering.

I'm sure I'll have some new surrounds within a few weeks since I haven't really been happy with the little quintets as a surround speaker..just happened to have them available when I needed them.

I'll let you all know how things sound after I play around with it this weekend!

Ok, said I would get a photo...so here is a quick shot...not of the whole entertainment cabinet cause its not all put back together yet...but this is the rack with the D* HR20, DA3100ES, Sony RDR GX-315 and my ancient Sony CDP C-225 5 CD changer from way way back...early 90's?

Anyhow, I'll get a better photo later but enjoy this for now...Rob

Steve, tried your initial setting when I got home and all I have to say now is WOW WOW WOW...the sound is INCREDIBLE now, I don't know what I had going on last night but this receiver sounds so much better than my old receiver...I can't believe I waited this long to get an ES receiver!

I think that surround speakers will make a huge difference but now that I have everything calibrated with the sound meter I think I can live with things for awhile!

Time to go put a movie in and see what the wife thinks

Thats Great Rob....Glad I could help

Don't know what you were running before...But in all fairness if it had been calibrated it may have sounded much better than you remember...Albeit not as good as the New ES

I'm sure you will enjoy your new ES for a long time to come...Please go ahead and Tinker with some of the other setup options I gave you to see what works the best for you....That's part of the fun of this hobby Tinkering

Be sure to keep us up to date...We like reports....

Actually Rob....After reviewing my post about Crossovers and Calibration...I actually made a small mistake in the first setup....

I originally said to set the Sub crossover to 100hz on the sub itself which really does no good.....when matching the one in the receiver.

I would advocate using both the Sub and the Receiver crossover if you had too much bass because of the mains and center (when set to large) playing down as low as they do....being that the only available crossover in the receiver is set at 100hz...and everything being sent to the Surrounds (set to small) below that 100hz is being re-directed to the sub...and speakers set to large....

Or you could then use the one in the sub to De-Localise it (Frequencies below say 70hz are generally considered non-directional) meaning you can't tell where they are coming from....

With that said...You could lower the sub to below 70hz if you feel that you are hearing all the bass from the Subs location...which is not how it should be....You would like to be able to get directional bass cues from the other speakers....Not cover them with the sub....

Don't know what I was thinking up there....Lol
