Hi,
I'm visiting my brother and trying to hook up his Sony KV-34HS510 to receive HDTV broadcasts. He does not have cable, so we're using his rooftop antenna. He is receiving channels, but not in HD. (I have an XBR800 at my house that I have hooked up to my cable box, so I know what an HD broadcast should look like.)
We have the antenna hooked directly into the VNH/UHF input on the back - that's correct, right? On my XBR800, an HD broadcast automatically defaults to widescreen - all his channels are coming in with the bars on the side.
What do I need to do show him what an HD broadcast looks like? Shouldn't it default to HD automatically if the show is broadcast in HD? We've watched broadcasts that I know are in HD, but he's not getting them in HD.
Thanks for any help!
Mark

The 'KV' at the front means it does NOT have a digital tuner, which is needed to receive HD and other digital signals. TV's with digital tuners start with 'KD'.

Thanks! But it does have an analog tuner, right?
! searched a long time on the web for info on what kind of tuner it had, but couldn't find it. Even the manual wasn't clear. Can you point me to a source where I could have found out about it?

All TV sets marketed in the US include a NTSC (standard) tuner. The KV-34HS510 includes two NTSC tuners. The channel coverage for the tuners is VHF:2-13/ UHF: 14-69/ CATV: 1-125. If an ATSC tuner (required for reception of digital channels ) were provided, it would be listed in the FEATURES section of the Operating Instructions. The only way that you can watch HDTV programming on the KV-34HS510 is via a component video connection (Video 5 or 6) or a DVI-D connection (Video 7) to a digital satellite or cable box. ----------------- -John

Thanks for all the help. It would be nice if Sony clearly stated the features of each model in the manual. Instead, it seems as if the manual for different models is virtually the same, with just a different model number on the cover. At their website, the only info available on older models is the manual, which doesn't give an overview of the features.
Thank god for the web and helpful experts!
