Rita's coming tonight, so I unplugged my STR-DA2ES and CDP-C645 cd changer and wrapped them in their original plastic wraps and put them in a safe place away from the door and window. . I wrote down all my cable connections so I can reconnect them quickly. I unhooked one of my Athena AS-F2s and also moved it away from the door and window. The other AS-F2, my SL-HF870D SuperBeta and DVP-NS575P can be quickly moved, too. I just hope the electricity is on Saturday so I can listen to the Big Game--my alma mater vs. its arch rival. And I hope I won't be posting from that Big Agoraquest in the sky.
Watch me on the national news on Saturday night---I'll be the Rita evacuee in the Astrodome with a Sony XBR LCD tv that I bought with my FEMA voucher.

Rita was supposed to make Houston look like New Orleans after Katrina, but it didn't happen. Lots of wind, but little rain. Not much damage citywide. The sun is out---only in Houston would the sun shine while a hurricane is in the area. I lost elewctricity only for a few seconds. Overall, Houston and I fared pretty well considering the dire predictions two days ago.
On the downside, no FEMA voucher, so no Sony XBR LCD tv.
That's a pretty fair tradeoff.

Man, I am so sorry to hear that you lost your FEMA voucher as I know that you have been wanting that Sony XBR LCD. Try to concentrate on the upside, you still have your STR-DA2ES and CDP-C645 not to mention those fantastic AS-F2's.
Seriously, I am glad to hear that things didn't go as predicted and that you were able to dodge the "bullet". Thanks for posting back so quickly.

That is some balmy weather. Rita has had the opposite effect here in Chicago. Our temps are supposed to drop this week, they are talking about highs in the 50's and lows in the 30's. I'm not ready for that this early.
One of my brothers got married in Houston 20 years ago, in the month of August. I can't remember a more sweltering heat than Houston in August. Still I love the warm weather and would gladly take the 110 degrees over 30 degree temps.

Houston's heat index has been 100+ almost every day since the beginning of July. Rita brought a 12 hour break. Walking outside is like standing in front of a blast furnace. I worry about how the heat affects my Sonys and Athenas when the ac isn't on when I'm away from home.

dragon53- Maybe you should consider a back up power supply for your AC.
Do you turn the AC off when you use your A/V system?

I don't listen to my stereo much in the summer---ac is too loud, neighbors play loud hispanic rap music, traffic and kids produce lots of noise, etc. I listen a lot in the winter when I can close the windows at night---music sounds much better under those conditions. I'm waiting for the end of October when the weather is right and listening is enjoyable---not tolerable.

I know what you mean about noise pollution interfering with the listening experience.
I use 2" of Celotex sound insulation material on the window and of my listening room as well as a combination of 1" of Celotex and a sheet of 3/4 " plywood for the door that I can slide into place during listening sessions.
This level of sound insulation combined with 96 sq. ft. of Auralex Studiofoam makes it so quiet in the room that you can "hear" the silence.
Fortunately it is cool enough here in the Pacific Northwest in the summer that I can turn off the AC after cooling down the room and it will remain cool for a couple of hours.
