I have had my KDF-60-XBR-950 for the last 20 months and everything has been going great. However, over the last few weeks I've been getting the dreaded buzzing sound as it fires up the lamp.
Do you think I just need to replace the lamp?
Or did I all of the sudden develop the bad lamp issue?
Just curious what you experts think.

Does the LAMP-LED flash or does the POWER/STANDBY indicator blink 5 times when you turn the set on? ----------------- -John

It would seem that the LAMP indicator flashes periodically but not all the time. Sometimes it goes BZZZZZ and sometimes it doesn't.
I'll pay more attention and let you know speciffically what I see.

The BZZZZZ that you hear is probably the lamp driver (POWER BLOCK). Its the HV power supply for the lamp. The LAMP indicator won't flash unless HV is detected by means of an antenna wire that picks up RF from the lamp driver leads to the lamp. ----------------- -John

OK well I've been watching my TV for a bit here.
I just moved from one house to another and the BZZZZZZZZZZZ sound appeared to have stopped.
Then just the day before yesterday the BZZZZ sound was heard again.
Now today I go to turn on the TV and the standby light flashes three times the lamp light doesn't seem to flash.
I hear the fan power on but I'm getting no picture. Any ideas on what this means?
(Please just tell me I need to replace the lamp.)

Three blinks means, "Lamp cover error". The probable cause is that the lamp cover is not attached securely. ----------------- -John

OK I checked the Lamp Cover, took it off and reset it.
Then the TV started working again. Then about three nights later the red light started flashing again. So I went to reset it and noticed that the Lamp Cover was bent.
So I straightened it up a little but I think it is deformed now. The TV works after I reset it a second time.
I'm at about 5000 hours for my lamp.
So I'm going to purchase another lamp but
can i purchase another Lamp Cover?
BTW jehill thank you for all your help in this matter.

Yes you can, but there is a service bulletin for that issue, Document Reference E27967299. It may be necessary to replace the lamp or exhaust fans. A lamp door may become deformed when the cooling fans (both lamp and exhaust) are clogged with household dust. A secondary potential cuse is low fan voltage. You need to solicite the services of an authorized Sony servicenter. The service bulletin calls for a kit of parts that may only be obtained by a servicenter. ----------------- -John

John,
Is it advisable to perform periodic cleaning of the lamp and exhaust fans to prevent the lamp door from becoming deformed? I have a year on my KDF-55WF655 and am wondering if a little preventive maintenance is in order.

It sure sounds like it would be a good idea. Apparently, the lamp cover is distorted by excessive heat. If periodic cleaning can prevent fan failures and overheating, periodic cleaning certainly makes sense, but it doesn't appear to be that easy. The SB includes step-by-step instructions in two pdf files and assumes that the needed replacement parts are available (a kit from Sony). I checked the KDF-55WF655 service info and there is no similar SB, although it obviously could have the same problem. ----------------- -John

Thanks for checking John. I think that this winter when I have some spare time I will open up the back of my TV and give those fans a cleaning. How does that old adage go......... An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
