Which is preferred for DVD backup copies? AC3 or DTS? I have a few with audio in both formats.
My receiver is a DA5ES.

Deon- While some Members seem to prefer one or the other I would suggest making a backup copy of the soundtrack which has the higher bitrate which will probably be DTS @ 750 kbps rather than AC3 @ 384 kbps.

Since they are your backups for use in your own player, DTS would be the higher quality sound option.
But be aware that the DTS soundtracks will not "downmix" like AC3 does on a lot of cheaper DVD players which output in stereo only, thus resulting in no sound at all on them...

Thanks for the responses. That's what I was thinking that DTS is probably better because of the bitrate being higher. I also suspected that I would only have sound on my DTS-capable setup once I strip out the AC3 encoded soundtrack. Not a problem since they are basically for my home use only and I always do have the original to go back to if I want to play it on the neighbors dvd player or something like that.
Thanks -Deon

I have some very well recorded Music DVD's that have both DTS and AC-3 soundtracks like Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" and the DTS soundtrack just kills the AC-3 version as far as sound quality goes.
