Is the black border (about 1/4 " thick) around my 32xbr450 screen normal? I just purchase the tv and not sure if this should be there.

All the time or only in a certan source? When watching tv shows do you see weird graphics at the top of the image?

This is normal. In order to get a perfectly square picture among other things. Usually the plastic bezel on a tv or computer monitor covers up a good portion of the tube at the edges. For example this is why computer monitors say 19 inch tube but only say 17.5 viewable (because the rest is covered). It would be possible to make the image larger on the sides but you would get a rounded image. They intentionally black a small portion for straight edges. If you take your set apart you will see the plastic covers very little of the screen.
Dont worry about it. If the image was closer to the edge there would be even more reflections from the glossy plastic.

Im pretty sure that all trinitron based screens (including computer monitors and even non wega sonys) use this method. Its only more visable on the larger sets. I was at a freinds last night who has a 25 inch sony and it has the same percent of black border.

I have it on all my Television and Computer Monitors. However it's very visible on the Wega. It's due to increase in screen size. Everything can be seen easier when you are looking at a 36 inch television instead of a 17 inch computer screen.
But the funny thing is that I didn't notice it before. But since this topic. I began to notice more and more

Since this thread ive started noticing it on displays that DONT have it! I have dual display computer monitors and one is not trinitron. It bugs me now because i can tell the screen is not perfectly square like the other monitor and my tv. Sony did something right when they masked the screen like this!

I also noticed that some (not all) trinitron sets have a small clear dot right on the edge of the black line.
Let me explain what i mean. The edge of the screen is pretty much a perfect straight line. In the very center there is ONE extra pixel that exist past the black line. This pixel helps you to adjust to get a perfectly centered and sized image.
Since a computer monitor does not have overscan you are supposed to adjust it so the screen is just the right size. What this dot helps with is you can output a totally white image. Then adjust the picture until the dot JUST barely lights up. Back it off one click and you have a perfectly adjusted image (positioning wise anyways).

sorry in the last post I meant trinitron computer monitors. Tvs based on trinitron tubes do not have this, since there is quite a bit of overscan (4% or more).
