Fellow DIRECTV subscribers, I heard a rumor (from a good source) that we will be getting local channels in HD soon, by the end of January. I don't know for sure how much of the rumor is true, if any or which regions of the country it would include. But, I do know that I just checked and I now have FOX in HD, this just started today. Hopefully this is the start of something good, I have my fingers crossed. This does of course, make it quite to type lol.....

    Toli,
I'm with you on this one as I checked Direct Tv channel 88 and it's on!!!
So if they do kick this off ,I guess I can disconnect my external ant, that I'm using now to pick up the local HD channels ?

ray77099- I am not sure if this is the start of what my source what talking about or not. This FOX HD channel 88 isn't your local FOX station, it is from New York just like the CBS HD station. So I am not sure if this is the beginning or if we will soon get our actual local channel's broadcast in HD. There are two reasons why you may not want to remove your external HD antenna just yet: 1. All the local type network stations aren't available in HD through DIRECTV, yet.... 2. The programming isn't always the same; i.e. local broadcast news. Of course I'm not saying that you shouldn't either, I don't even use an external antenna.

Thanks for clearing that up Toli as I was excited when the Fox channel 88 was on with nothing special on it.
My local channels on the Directv's line up start with channel-2 and end at channel-67.
    Those are non HD channels.
I have to use a external ant, to pick up the locals in HD.
I'm not going to un-hook it until Directv has them all in HD.

    Toli,

Do you know if to recieve the local HD channels you have to be a subscriber of the HD package and also have the triple LNB dish. I know that ESPN, Discovery etc. channels are directed from a different satellite that the standard round dish with a single LNB doesn't pick up.

This is interesting. I personally don't care if I get my local news or not. I'm more interested in the network programming.

    Mostly off-topic:

As it turns out, I'm dropping DirecTV tomorrow for the evil Comcast. I just purchased a Samsung 56" DLP a few days ago and quickly tired of watching standard definition programming on it. I use a DirecTivo now and didn't want to drop a grand on the HD DirecTivo. Also, I cannot install an antenna at my condo because the only useful place I could put it is in a common area. So, no local HD channels. I'm only 6 miles from any of the HD transmitters in Chicago, but I get nothing with an antenna inside as a result of tall buildling, multipath, etc.

I'm getting a Motorola 6412 dual-tuner HD STB tomorrow. If anybody is interested in how it and iGUIDE compare to DirecTivo, let me know.

Comcast is giving me $25 off for 16 months for turning in my dish and receiver. I'm giving them an old RCA receiver, not my DirecTivo! The price is only $56/month before taxes for all digital channels, HD, HBO and the DVR. After those 16 months, the price is not so good.

    So, back on topic:

Maybe within 16 months the stars will align, HD DirecTivo will be affordable, local channels, or at least the national networks, will be carried by DirecTV and I can tell Comcast to go stuff it again.

ray77099- I agree, I would leave the antenna connected at least until you can get those channels.

jttar- That's correct, you need the triple-LNB dish and the HD package. You can't receive any HD channels without the HD package no matter which channel package or equiptment you have.

Well Toli. thats not true. I don't have the HD package but my HD box and dish picks up FOX and CBS HD, and if my dish had clearance I'd get the HBO and Showtime HD channels free of charge.

    DaveW,
Can you go into more detail as to how you would accomplish getting the HBO and Showtime in HD if you had more clearance ?
    Thanks

DaveW- What you said is only half true, though not intentionally I am sure, this situation isn't related to the dish's position. The reason you get those two channels is because DIRECTV changed thier policy on those HD channels about a week ago. As long as your DIRECTV package has local channels in it, you will also get the CBS HD and FOX HD channels as well even without the HD package. But, without the HD package you're not going to get Showtime HD nor the HBO HD channel, unless you are using an illegal access card or somehow getting channels to which you aren't entitled.

Simple. A tree blocks line of sight for the HD satellite.

Toli, I've been getting Fox HD since the World Series, not just a week ago. CBS and NBC are just now coming in, and at least according to the DirecTV website, the HBO and Showtime HD channels come with the respective premium packages, NOT as part of the HD package. I cannot confirm any change because I have no LOS for the B and C satellites.

DaveW-  Plain and simple, if you don't have the HD package and you are getting more HD channels than just CBS HD and FOX HD and you aren't using an external antenna; I can't explain how you are doing it but you are getting channels at no charge that you are suppossed to be paying for within the HD package. I won't argue with you anymore, I will suggest that you call DIRECTV yourself and ask them.

I did just that. After checking, the rep said that HBO and Showtime HD channels came with the premium movie packages, not the HD package.

DaveW- I am sorry if I came across harsh and I do apologize. But, as unintentional as it was I am afraid false information was being spread here and I can't just let that be. I really am glad that you said what you said about your Premium packages because that's exactly the answer to our discussion. I don't want people reading this to believe that just because they have HBO or Showtime or local channels that they are automatically enititled to those channels in HD, which is the way I heard your responses to the above comments which brought you to this thread in the first place, it's just not true. You have to be in one of the following three scenarios to have access to those HD channels:

you are a new DIRECTV customer and are getting them free for an introductory time period

you have the corresponding channel premium channel package, i.e. HBO Premium like you said that you do, click here for a link to examples

you subscribe to the Total Choice Premier package which includes all the premium packages, click here

As to the CBS HD and FOX HD stations, you must not have signed up very recently. New DIRECTV customers or potential DIRECTV customers may read this thread and wonder why they don't get them. If you don't have them already and have your local stations broadcasting in HD you can't get the CBS HD and FOX HD stations from this point forward according to the new law, click here for a link to that law. If you click here it states that you can: "Watch your favorite prime-time shows in High-Definition with your DIRECTV HD Receiver, an HD Television Set and an off-air antenna."

I also have to make it clear to every one reading this that even with the above scenarios, you still won't get all the HD channels, not even close. Without the HD package you won't get other HD channels like ESPN HD and Discovery HD. To view the channels only included in the HD package, click here.

Hope that clears this up for all those reading.

    Have a Merry Christmas!

    Toli,
Outstanding post!!! That does clear it all up. I don't have any of the premium packages and the way it came across to me it I didn't need too.
All one would need is some type of clearance with the sat-dish.

Hs anyone checked thier DIRECTV channel guide today? I noticed today that each of my local channels now appears twice in the channel guide, my PBS station now appears in standard DIRECTV digital and in HD. What my friend was refering to, the reason I started this thread may just be happening. I for one certainly have my fingers crossed!

Update: Those extra channels are now gone, not sure if that meant anything, maybe just a test?

    Toli,

Thanks for the link. Exciting times indeed for us DirecTV customers. Looks like your inside information was right on target.
