Has anyone noticed this unsavory habit that I've now noticed a second time on a dvd. It seems that Universal, on the new 'widescreen' release of Happy Gilmore(yeah, I love the older Sandler movies- guilty pleasure?) used the full screen print, zoomed in, and chopped off the top and bottom of the picture to create the 16x9 version. The point is to get more picture, now there is less. I also noticed this on the 'widescreen' release of National Lampoon's Family Vacation. If I hadn't already owned the orignal ff release of these movies I may not have noticed, but after comparing the two it is painfully obvious- the tops of peoples heads are cut off on close shots and details previously near the bottom of the shot are now gone. You may not be able to change the way they are doing things, but at least you could let them know that you noticed what they are doing.

It is possible that these films were shot in a format known as "Super 35." In this format, the film is actually shot in a "full frame" (1.33:1)format, but the top and bottom of the frames are removed for the theatrical release to create a "wide screen" (2.35:1) image. Thus, if you were to compare the Full Frame image to the Wide Screen image, the Full Frame image would have more content.

The first copy was free- the second was to get widescreen. I know, still unexcusable.
