Thinking of starting off with a DAVS550 cinema in a box solution as it seemed to get really good reviews and is now very cheap.
Quick question - will I be able to connect the output from a Sky Plus box through it so I can watch those films broadcast in 5.1 with the proper sound?
Any ideas

According to this article the DAV S550 has Digital Optical inputs-

If the Sky Plus Box has a Digital Optical output then it will be fully compatable with the Sony DAV S550.

For an optimal Digital Optical connction which will bring you the clearest and most detailed sound when using a Digital Optical interconnect I stongly rcommend using 30M hz bandwidth Glass Toslink instead of the 6Mhz plastic conuctor Toslink which is so commonly vailable.
This page has several lengths of Glass Toslink available starting at just $30 for a 1 meter length-

lofi- It should be no problem with the digital optical from the Sky Plus box, just connect it to VIDEO 2 on the DAV-S550 and then select VIDEO 2 on the DAV-S550 to hear that audio. The S-Video cable from the Sky Plus box will have to be connected directly to one of your TV's S-Video inputs, as the DAV-S550 doesn't have an S-Video input, it only has an S-Video output.

It looks like you will be able to use the Toslink Optical connection to your DAV S550 then and this will in no way conflict with using S-Video.
I do urge you to get the Glass Toslink though because it is an excellent interconnect. Last week I compared my Glass Toslink in an A/B listening critical test to the much acclaimed $600 Marigo Apparition Reference coaxial Digital wire and the Glass Toslink proved to far more proficient at resolving low level detail as well as providing a decidedly more mature harmonic structure than the much more expensive reference grade Marigo Apparition coax was able to.

LoFi- I'm sure that Captain America will have the Glass Toslink that you need.
I want to warn you though that the use of this Glass Toslink may alter your qualification to keep the moniker you are now using.

Hey Maxx, I search out that cable.
Is it this product http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SP-TOC-99HQ
The LoFi name has suck with me for about 10 years but you are right, as I become wiser and richer things are less lofi in some areas than they were !
Just one more question though - is the DAVS550 multi region and if not can it be made so - I have a few region 1 disks.
Thanks again
LoFi

You could go to the Agrraquest search engine and enter "DAV S550 region hack" and see what results you get.

It is a remote control hack, or iR from a PC/Laptop. Try VCDhelp.com. ----------------- Sony: DVP-NS930V, STR-DB2000QS, CDP-XB930, SLV-X9, DCR-PC105E, DSC-T200, PS3 , NWZ-A829K, NWS 205. Other: Hitachi 42” Plasma, Samsung 40" LCD, SkyHD, Wii, Xbox 360 Speakers: KEF 2005.2
