Many people have chosen to forgo the complications of crossovers and have opted  to use full range speakers made by companies like Lowther...

IMO, crossovers can be regarded as the heart of a speaker. Unfortunately, this area is where many manufacturers cut costs on their products.

I've never heard good full-range speakers, but the design benifits are interesting.

The best full range speakers I know of have been DIY projects built from scratch by someone who appreciates the sound of the ultimate simplicity of crossover-less speakers.

NiteHawn's original post makes me wish someone had a tutorial on moding/improving crossovers. I think a lot of mid-fi or better speakers have solid improvement potential because the "bean counters" had too much say on how the crossovers in their speakers would be built.

RickeyM- You could possibly contact maverick11359 about building some improved speaker crossovers. These are the external crossovers he built for his speakers...

I remember that. I think he basically rebuilt the stock crossovers with higher quality parts and got a good boost in SQ.
