Network Handycam Camcorder Features Advanced Digital Video, Still Image Capture and Bluetooth Technology
[COMDEX 2001] Sony Electronics today introduced a new MiniDV camcorder that gives consumers the power to record exceptional video and the freedom to share treasured memories on the Net without a PC connection. The DCR-PC120BT camcorder comes equipped with a 1.5 megapixel CCD imager, MPEG Movie Mode and Bluetooth™ wireless networking technology. “There are so many personal and professional applications for this new networking technology,” said Takashi Kondo, senior vice president of Digital Imaging Products Division at Sony Electronics. “It’s for those times when everyone can’t be together for important happenings, like a wedding a world away or the first product rolling off the assembly line. This camcorder will connect you in an instant to the important moments of your life.”
Using Bluetooth wireless technology with the DCR-PC120BT camcorder, consumers can access the Internet without a PC.
Consumers can use this network feature three ways. First, upload still images and MPEG video directly to Sony’s online photo sharing ImageStationsm service. At ImageStation.com, consumers can create a Web album and email invitations to family and friends for online viewing.
Second, users can choose to send text e-mail messages more than 500 characters with attached still images and MPEG video directly from the camcorder to a friend’s inbox. The PC120BT can also receive text messages up to 1,024 characters.
And third, the DCR-PC120BT camcorder allows for Web browsing and viewing on the camcorder’s LCD display. Users can view Web pages and download them to the supplied 8MB Memory Stick® media for quick and easy access.
To initiate the network feature, the bundled Bluetooth network adaptor is connected to an analog phone line. The camcorder wirelessly communicates with the adaptor, which can be placed up to 30 feet away.
Sony will offer a service designed for easy set-up and connection to the Internet via the DCR-PC120BT Handycam® camcorder. The company expects to make more information about the service available in early 2002.
Brighter and More Brilliant Video and Digital Still Images
The 1.5 megapixel imager in the DCR-PC120BT model raises the bar by delivering up to 530 lines of horizontal video resolution and stunning 1360 x 1020 digital still images.
To enhance the megapixel imager, Sony incorporated an intelligent pop-up flash to that ensures the capture of crisp still images in difficult lighting situations. In Digital Still Memory Mode, the intelligent pop-up flash system communicates with the camera to measure optimum exposure – virtually eliminating overexposed or underexposed images.
The DCR-PC120BT model is also the first camcorder to include the Hologram AF (auto focus) Low Light Laser Assist Focus System. Using a laser pattern for improved edge detection, this new camcorder promotes sharper focus of digital still images in low light situations.
MPEG Movie mode allows the capture of up to 60 seconds of video and audio in the Video Email Mode (160 x 112 resolution) or up to 15 seconds in the Presentation Mode (320 x 240 resolution). These mini-movies can be e-mailed from the Bluetooth technology-enabled camcorder or a PC, and inserted into Web pages or presentations.
Available in February for about $2,000, the 1-pound, 4-ounce DCR-PC120BT MiniDV camcorder also includes the following features:
Carl Zeiss™ Vario-Sonnar T* lens – The DCR-PC120BT introduces best-in-lens quality with the Carl Zeiss™ Vario-Sonnar T* lens. Carl Zeiss T* lenses have an advanced optical multi-layer coating offering less glare and flare with increased contrast. This results in vivid image brilliance, true-to-life color saturation and perfect renditions of subtle tones.
10X Optical/120X Precision Digital Zoom – Sony’s optical zoom brings the action up close and the precision digital zoom uses interpolation technology to make digital zooming cleaner, with less distortion than conventional digital zooms.
2.5″ Precision SwivelScreen™ LCD Display – The LCD display provides for sharp and detailed images during playback or when monitoring recording. Users have the choice when shooting to use either the LCD display or the precision color viewfinder.
Print Image Matching Technology (PIM) – PIM is a printing technology created by Epson America, Inc., that enables printers and camcorders to better work together to create frame-ready photos without complicated preparation. The DCR-PC120BT is the first Sony camcorder to incorporate this technology.
Worry Free Recording™ features – Consumers can enjoy high-quality digital video and audio in combination with Sony’s advanced Worry Free Recording™ features, such as SteadyShot® Picture Stabilization, the Super NightShot® O Lux recording system, InfoLithium® Battery with AccuPower™ System and i.LINK® Digital Video Interface.
