Sony has generated over £1 million in sales through its Twitter account, it has been reported.
Speaking at Marketing Week´s Social Media for Brand Building event, Nick Sharples, Sony head of corporate communications, said the company sees Twitter as a viable sales platform.
He noted that social media should be used alongside traditional channels.
“The marketing budget is now skewed towards integrated campaigns and includes public relations and social media at the inception of a marketing campaign. Even if we decide to run a big above-the-line campaign or focus on TV, we´ll apply social media amplification,” he added. With more companies choosing to use social media as part of their search marketing or online direct marketing campaigns, the news that Twitter could help boost sales could encourage more firms to try the site.
Recent research by the Society for New Communications Research revealed that Twitter is the fastest growing social media channel among fortune 500 companies.
