Sony’s new ICY-shot™ 5.1 megapixel (4.9 effective pixels) cooled-CCD still digital camera offers high-resolution images to industrial microscope users in semiconductor failure analysis, materials science and other industrial applications.

The ultra-sensitive, low-noise camera provides researchers with the key features needed for capturing high-quality images under the most challenging low-light conditions.

“This camera’s superb imagery and versatility means that it can be used in almost any industrial production or engineering environment,” said Jim Sandy, vice president of security and visual imaging for Sony Electronics’ Business Solutions and Systems Company. “The ICY-shot camera meets industry demands for high-resolution digital images in microscopy applications.”
The ICY-shot DXC-S500 model features a 2/3-inch, five million pixel CCD that can be cooled to 5ºC, allowing it to capture images with remarkable signal-to-noise ratios. It also has a 3.5-inch LCD monitor (viewable area measured diagonally), a PCMCIA Type II card slot for removable storage media, and an i.LINK® IEEE-1394 digital interface for fast computer data transfer with a compatible PC. Simple and instantaneous data transfer means that operators can easily employ captured images for process control, training, analysis and a variety of other purposes. Users can select exposures up to 60 seconds long in a variety of image sizes and formats.

Suitable for use by multiple operators, the camera allows up to three individual users to keep separate files, which can be beneficial for research, training or review. It is compatible with many popular imaging software programs and operating systems.

The camera’s two-piece design separates the optical head from the control unit for high performance, hands-off operation and contamination reduction in wafer inspection and other specialty applications. It attaches easily to any microscope using a standard C-mount.

The ICY-shot DXC-S500 camera is currently available from authorized resellers for a suggested list price of $5,995.
