: Sony Unveils Its Answer to Apple's iTunes
Posted by
claudio
on Friday, November 20, 2009 @ 12:34:26 EST (40 reads)
The tech giant will launch an online store selling music, movies, books, and other downloadable applications for mobile products.
Sony (SNE) is taking a page from Apple's playbook (AAPL). On Nov. 19, Sony said it plans to launch an online store selling music, movies, and books as well as other downloadable applications for mobile products. Sony's top executives didn't specify when the Internet store, tentatively called Sony Online Service, would go live or what it would look like. But the online storefront, announced at a management strategy meeting in Tokyo, is likely to bear some similarities to Apple's iTunes store and would be Sony's most ambitious attempt to link its products to its own vast library of digital content.
Coming up with a software strategy for Sony has been Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer's mission since taking over in mid-2006. The adjustment hasn't been easy. Long known for the world-class designs of its flat-screen Bravia TVs, Walkman music players, and Cybershot cameras, Sony has struggled to use software to its advantage.

Sony PS 3
: Premium Playstation Network service planned, won't affect online gaming
Posted by

on Thursday, November 19, 2009 @ 23:35:48 EST (75 reads)
Sony caused a bit of a stir when a slide from its recent investor conference alluding to a paid online PlayStation Network subscription service was unearthed by The Examiner (via Destructoid). With thoughts of a PSN equivalent of Xbox Live Gold worrying gamers, Sony quieted the uprising by assuring VG247 that if any subscription-based service was created, non-paying users would still be able to play their favorite games online for free, as the company stated that the subscription would only apply to "premium content and services."

: Sony Rumor: Sony is bringing Firefox to PS3!!!
Posted by
claudio
on Thursday, November 19, 2009 @ 23:23:20 EST (71 reads)
Playstation Insider has recently received a tip from a source very close to Sony who says that they have been in talks with Mozilla lately about possibly porting firefox over to the PS3. That said, our source made sure to point out that they were unsure if any deal had actually been reached at this point, but it is great news none the less considering the complaints Sony has been getting about the lack of reliability with their current built in PS3 web browser.
Throwing firefox into the mix would give PS3 the ultimate advantage when it came to internet functionality. I know I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for this one, and PSInsider will be sure to bring you any updates to this rumor as they become available.

: We have the Top Thanksgiving Black Friday 2009 Deals
Posted by
claudio
on Thursday, November 19, 2009 @ 09:41:42 EST (83 reads)
We have looked through all the leaked and available Black Friday deals and have come up with a list of retailers who have by far the best deals. From the entire list, Walmart and Target have the best Black Friday deals. For example Tom Tom GPS for $59 or a Blu-Ray player for under $100 ($78 to be exact). Or what about at 32 inch High Definition LCD for $246. Target and Walmart have really stepped it up this year which is great. However, on the other side Best Buy deals look worse then last year. Not sure why since they want to draw more shoppers.
All the deals are in the full story

: California Approves TV Efficiency Rules
Posted by
claudio
on Thursday, November 19, 2009 @ 01:25:32 EST (109 reads)
California regulators on Wednesday approved the nation’s first energy efficiency standards for televisions, requiring their electricity consumption to be cut nearly in half by 2013.
“This is a consumer protection measure, a measure that will protect the environment and which will save us from building a massive new power plant,” said Karen Douglas, chairwoman of the California Energy Commission, at a meeting in Sacramento.
The five energy commissioners voted unanimously to require television manufacturers to produce new models that use 33 percent less electricity by 2011 and 49 percent less electricity by 2013.
In recent years, televisions have become one of the home’s biggest energy hogs as ever-larger flat-screen models have proliferated.

: Interview with Tetsuo Urabe, OLED Engineer and Winner of Okochi Memorial Award
Posted by
claudio
on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 @ 23:56:09 EST (91 reads)
[Interview conducted by Sony.net] In March 2009, Tetsuo Urabe of Sony's Display Device Development Group and three others received the 55th Okochi Memorial Award. These awards are presented to individual researchers and business organizations that have made major contributions to the field of production engineering, including the development of production technology, and the implementation of advanced production methods. The award received by Urabe and his colleagues was in recognition of their work relating to the development and mass-production of the world's first OLED television.
Sony has earned widespread acclaim for its success in the development and mass-production of the world's first OLED television, which follows earlier development successes---the Super Top Emission structure for OLED panels, and the active matrix OLED display.
