MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19

BLADE RUNNER 2049---Rutger Hauer commented on the sequel, "...It looks great but I struggle to see what that film was necessary. I just think if something is so beautiful, you should just leave it alone and make another film. Don’t lean with one elbow on the success of that was earned over 30 years in the underground."
He added, "In many ways, BLADE RUNNER wasn’t about the replicants, it was about what does it mean to be human? It’s like E.T.. But I’m not certain what the question was in the second BLADE RUNNER. It’s not a character-driven movie and there’s no humor, there’s no love, there’s no soul. You can see the homage to the original. But that’s not enough to me. I knew that wasn’t going to work. But I think it’s not important what I think."

I think every time they hire a new director I’m rumored to be doing it. I’d love to make a Bond film at some point and I think those producers – Barbara and Michael – they do a tremendous job and Sam Mendes has done a terrific job the last couple of films, so they don’t particularly need me. But I’ve always been inspired by the films and would love to do one someday."

CALL OF DUTY---director Stefano Sollima (SICARIO 2: SOLDADO), who is in negotiations to direct the movie based on the video game, may have hinted he wants Tom Hardy and Chris Pine to star in the movie. He said about Hardy, "...I like almost everything [he’s been in]. I’m waiting for his VENOM. Even in MAD MAX, he was great." He said about Pine,"He’s tough, but he’s smart and he can have a sense of humor but he can [also] be in such a dramatic role. I like when you feel that an actor can play with different nuances and tone because this means they’re a good actor."

But halfway through production Rian [Johnson] got a toy, a prototype toy of the Kylo fighter. And they had the missiles on the side wings! So we went and redesigned a bit of it [in the movie] so that we could open it up and pop them out. I’ve heard of the toys’ influence in the past, but that was the first time for me.”

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA---director Francis Lawrence (THE HUNGER GAMES), in a question-and-answer series, commented on the status of the Universal Pictures theatrical movie based on the tv series.

Q: Is the movie still underway?
A: " Yeah, I’m working on that, that’s something I’m developing. I’m working on that with Lisa Joy, who is one of the creators of WESTWORLD. The original series was actually one of the first sets that I ever went on. I remember being a kid and loving that show and they were filming near my house and my mom took me down there and I got to try on a Cylon helmet."

Q: Will the movie give nods to the original ABC series which had input from Ralph McQuarrie and John Dyskstra and other STAR WARS alumni and the Ron Moore series?
A: "Oh of course! There will definitely be visual nods. We’re all fans of both series so there will definitely be nods, but for it to be worth doing for us we have to have our own take on it. Without getting into too much detail, there is thematic kind of stuff to make it relevant today. What makes something interesting to do is if there’s a relevance to the world we live in now."

Q: Are you still involved with the SGT. ROCK movie?
A: "No, not for a long time...My take on it… and I think they were just trying to figure out the whole DC thing, and clearly they’re still trying to figure it out. They were just putting the group together when we were doing that. What I wanted to do was a near-future war film, not an actual World War II thing. A near-future type film with World War II film tropes. We started developing it, but then they ended up holding it back to keep it for after they regrouped for the other new DC stuff."

Image

THE WALKING DEAD---showrunner Scott R. Gimple explained why Carl Grimes was killed off, “We wanted to tell a version of the comic story that kept emotions similar to what you’d get when reading the [source material] but in different ways, so that the comic-book-reading audience didn’t expect what was going to happen. We plan to do that moving forward as well — sometimes pulling moments from the book in sort of verbatim ways and sometimes in ways that are very different, with the goal of heightening the message in some way. Carl’s death fell into that [category]. This in many ways is sort of the ending of an era for THE WALKING DEAD and the starting of a new one.”

CATWOMAN---writer John Rogers commented on the 2004 Halle Berry movie, in which only two scenes from his script were included in the movie, "As one of the credited writers of CATWOMAN, I believe I have the authority to say: because it was a sh*t movie dumped by the studio at the end of a style cycle, and had zero cultural relevance either in front of or behind the camera.
This is a bad take. Feel shame."
Rogers added that the movie went through a long, troubled development period with Michelle Pfeiffer and Tim Burton leaving before it evolved into a different movie starring Berry.

CHURCHILL'S SECRET AFFAIR---a new British documentary claims Winston Churchill had a secret affair with Doris Castlerosse, the great aunt of model/actress Cara Delevingne. Churchill's private secretary, Jock Colville said, “I don’t think that in his 60 or 55 years’ married life he ever slipped up, except on this one occasion when Lady Churchill was not with him and by moonlight in the south of France, …. he certainly had an affair, a brief affair with … Lady Castlerosse as I think she was called. … Doris Castlerosse, yes that’s right."

LORE---Amazon renewed the series for Season 2.

TRIVIA---in THE UNTOUCHABLES, Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) heads a team of Federal agents who are assigned to bring down notorious Chicago mobster Al Capone (Robert De Niro). After being unable to prosecute Capone for bootlegging, murder, extortion and other crimes, Federal accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith) suggests that Capone be charged with income tax evasion because he hasn't paid his income taxes in years. The Untouchables then nab Capone's bookkeeper and business ledger. At Capone's trial, the bookkeeper is the government's key witness and deciphers the ledgers showing Capone made millions of dollars from his criminal enterprises but paid no income tax.
Ness discovers Capone has bribed the jury and tricks the judge to switch juries with another trial resulting in Capone being convicted.
In reality, Capone was turned in by his own attorney, Edward "Easy Eddie" O'Hare, who became a government informant. He led IRS agent Frank Wilson to Capone's bookkeeper who deciphered the ledgers, and O'Hare told the Feds that Capone had bribed the jury which led to the judge switching the juries.
Shortly before Capone was released from prison, O'Hare was gunned down---most likely on Capone's orders.
O'Hare's son was Lieutenant Commander Edward "Butch" O'Hare who was the Navy's first ace and received the Medal of Honor in World War II. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is named after the war hero.

THE UNTOUCHABLES starred Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Charles Martin Smith and Andy Garcia.

TRIVIA---probably the least-known of director Clint Eastwood's movies is BREEZY which is about a successful, but cynical, real estate salesman who falls in love with a teenage hippy and finds a new lease on life. The movie was written for Eastwood, but he decided to direct it with William Holden and Kay Lenz starring.
Eastwood has a cameo as a man on the pier where Holden and Lenz are walking. Holden's son, Scott, has a cameo as the veterinarian.
Roger C. Carmel co-stars as Holden's best friend, but he's better know as Harry Mudd on STAR TREK. Marj Dusay plays Holden's former girlfriend and also co-starred in "Spock's Brain" on STAR TREK.
Odd for an Eastwood movie, the music was written by Michel Legrand with lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman, the Oscar-winning team for THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR.

WHIFFS was a box office bomb, but it's sole bright spot was the theme song, "Now That We're in Love", which was nominated for an Academy Award. It was written by George Barrie, the movie's producer, who was head of Faberge. Barrie created Faberge's highly successful Brut cologne and was an early pioneer of celebrity endorsements with Farrah Fawcett, Joe Namath, Roger Moore, Margaux Hemingway and others promoting Faberge products.
