Hi!

My CDP-338ESD is running perfect except for the first 10 sec of the first track which I have to fast forward otherwise it just tries to start but won't...

What is this due to, bad laser, need of cleaning or else?

The unit is really working great year after year except for these first ten....!

Did you lube the laser "slide"? It's not a laser issue IMO if the rest of the disc plays ok.

You can try a light general purpose oil to see if that cures the problem. You may have to work the sled back and forth (machine off) to get things well oiled. The proper way is the dissamble the mechanism and clean all the old grease off and reapply some lithium grease, but that can be more of a complicated process.

If you can give me a tip of a brand and model of a light general purpose oil I would be very grateful!!!

The built quality is quite close to my CDP-X55ES so I certainly look the CDP-338ES as a impressive back-up...!!

For oil, there are many types, not sure what you have in your area, but I have used 3 in 1 general purpose oil or maybe sewing machine oil. You just have to use it sparingly as to not make a mess inside the player. I have also used white grease in some cases for gears and such. Perhaps others may want to chime in as well as to what they use.

You may want to get relatively clued up with the control pots on the large PCB which calibrate the laser.

With my 337 which was jittery for the first few seconds, I adjusted them and got it working really well.

The general rule is to be bloody careful and not mess around with the ones which sort out the laser focus. I merely fiddled with mine because I had listed the player on eBay, but when I saw the CD spinning on closing the tray means the laser is working, I decided to give it a go!

I also cleaned/re lubricated all the moving parts I could get to

My 608esd i believe is the North American version of the 338esd. U can see the 4 yellow adjustment pots for the laser just right of the transport. I'm not totally sure that u can lube the rails on the kss-151a setup as they use three linear motors for quick & accurate movement of the laser.
Be sure to take care when adjusting the pots & make sure you mark each one to know what spot they were set at originally!
Good luck!!!
