My main system does double duty for movies and music like I think most HTs do. Even though I'm much more concerned with the SQ of music my system actually spends more time producing audio for movies and TV._mykl

It is so darn hard to find time for dedicated music listening. Much like Mykl my major concern is how the music sounds but I end up using my system more for TV and movie viewing.

Man did you ever hit it on the head my friend!!! That is so true for me too and I find it rather frustrating. It seems to me I did alot more listening to music from my system in my 20s than I do now. Ironically it seems to me it should be the other way around. I'm confused as to the why of the situation. Man was I ever busy and on the go in my 20s. Where did I find the time to listen to music? Is the problem because there's so much more on TV now that it cuts into my time so much more? Am I just more picky when it comes to music listening now? What I mean is, did I listen to my system much more for background then than I'm willing to now? I think it's a combination of factors. Now when I listen to it for music I'm almost completely unwilling to have it on for background. If I can't do some critical listening on it I just pass. And since I have soooo many channels now it seems I'm always looking for something on TV. It's a "I pay for them I should watch them" mentality.

I remember when I added a powered Terk antenna to my STR-DA9000ES. I hooked it up, tested how and how well it worked and it just sat there as I VERY RARELY listen to the radio at home now. Only in the car and even then it's about 50/50 between the radio and CDs. I listened to the radio quite a bit at home back then. Once when I made a system change with the 9kES I neglected to hook the antenna back up. It was a good year before I did hook it up. The tuner section in the 9kES must be pristine. In fact it was over a month before I hooked the Terk up to my Marantz and the only time I've used the tuner was at that point to make sure everything was working. I know the reason for my lack of radio listening now. I'm just not into the new stuff coming out and why listen to oldies and be at the mercy of the programming director when I can just load what I want to hear myself.

I'm not sure where my snobbishness for using my system for background now comes from. I guess somewhere inside I feel it's "too good" for that. Like I'd be insulting it somehow. The problem with that is all of the time and expense that I've devoted to the SQ of my kit for music. Often times I find myself wondering if it's worth it given how little time I spend listening to music on it. Especially when I consider an upgrade like I am with new speakers for the mains. Oftentimes I think maybe I should concentrate more on the AV rather than the music aspects of my kit. I'm thinking that what I really should do is just start making my system "earn it's keep" on music by using it for background. Insult or no. I could still do critical listening on it. That is whenever I find the time._mykl

For me it's even worse. It's mostly TV. I'm one of those guys who has two systems in the living room. A music only system and the other for everything else. Most days I get home too late to really get into a movie so I catch a few shows and it's off to bed. I do get to watch broadcast movies or DVD's on my days off tho'.
The exception was recently I caught most of a 70's Soul Superstar special on PBS. It put me in so much of a music mode that after the special went off, I started pulling out CD's to listen to and stayed up another hour and a half past my usual bedtime.  It was worth it

Spot on Mykl. It all rings true for me too. One more reason  for me not having the time for dedicated listening is the few hours I have between getting home from work and going to bed I spend with my wife. We usually spend the time I would use for dedicated litening watchng TV.  Poor excuse I know but the truth.

Joe_I don't think it's a poor excuse at all. I'm in the same boat. When we get home after work the few hours of free time we have before going to bed we spend watching the boob-tube together. It's a shared experience we both really look forward to and it sure beats some of the other shared experiences we could do together in this town. Like hanging out in a casino or bar. We have different days off so I could do more dedicated, but like I said I end up surfing the cable channels. Noone to blame but me._mykl

PS_There is one other factor too. I didn't have a computer in the "old days". Surfing the web does cut into alot of the time I would otherwise spend on dedicated listening. Damned progress.
