I'm not surprised that he never did a test himself. The newer stuff has to be better. Afterall it's newer and tech has advanced. Right? That's the common perception and in truth partly stems from the propaganda that the manufacturers dish out to sell their new stuff. He's bought into it as have most. Part of the reason behind the upgradeitis that is so prevalent in our hobby. I am a bit surprised that he never did a closed-eyed listening test. Just goes to show he's a salesman and not an audiophile._mykl

The 508ESD arrived, it wasn't the one pictured and has a decal over the model number... and not nearly as nice as I had hoped . Also it is not playing. Seller swears he tested it, but I have my doubts.

When I press play DISK/MEMO comes up on the display and it does not spin. I was hoping that there was a simple fix or a button I needed to press to get it working. Thanks in advance! If not it looks like I may need to send back this rare gem. That would really kill me to have to do.

Check out this sticker on the front of my new 508ESD which regrettably was DOA.   Anyone ever hear of 45-bit processing?   It says 8 times oversampling as well. Sorry for the poor quality of the picture, but it gives you the idea.  I am wondering why they intentionally covered up the model number of this player with this decal?

I pulled this picture off the web.

This image:

Was used in this ebay completed sale.
And is used in this pending ebay listing.

This picture

is one of the images in the completed listing.

The seller makes no claim about non-functionality & at least one of the images wasn't his.

Let us know how this turns out.

Well he said he tested it before it left, but I have my doubts, since he also said he was on vacation and couldn't ship it until he got back. Something isn't adding up. The case was repainted and the front was reglued. And it appears like the case hasn't been open yet he took pictures of the inside? The inside of the tray is super dusty and appears like it hasn't been touched in years. The display is dim and flickering as well.

I asked for a refund, but the seller got all noble and said that he is not responsible for damage in shipment which I don't believe happened in this case. I think what did happen is he found one of these at a Goodwill, stole pictures, listed it, and then shipped it out without testing it.

It looks like he stole this picture from the website of the other seller. And when I called him out on this he denied it... And then I said something's not adding up, and I got a reply saying, "what's not adding up, what is your problem?"

Any ideas what that sticker is referring to? It says 45-bit and 8 Times oversampling.

I am familiar with 8x oversampling, it has been commonly used.

"and 45-bit digital filters" is used in TheVintageKnob for part of the description for the Sony CDP-R3.  I can also find "45-bit internal processing" for the XA7ES.

How does internal dust match this picture the seller posted?

You probably should save all parts of the ebay listing if you want to fight this person.  I normally save pdf copies of ebay or craigslist ads for items I purchase.

Hmm, I am wondering if this 45-bit processing is referring to the Dual BB PCM58 DAC's that it has and am curious to know what this does to improve the sound. The sound is REALLY special and I am actively seeking a XA7ES and 608ESD as they may be even better sounding. It looks like I may have to CDP-R3 to my list of players to look for.

The seller says the player may still have the transport lock in place. He says he will refund my money if I can't get it working, so all is well. I have my doubts that it was tested and he apologized for using what he called "stock" photos which were clearly taken from another listing. All is well!

Good to hear that the seller refund the money if necessary.

Don't bother communicating any more with this joker of a seller - file a complaint with eBay/ paypal. You will get your money back - eBay ALWAYS sides with the buyer in these kinds of disputes.
