That Mexican rosewood is beautiful. Be sure to post some finished pictures.

Thanks

Just finished these up last nite out of Cocobolo (mexican) rosewood. They are still in the rough stage but couldn't resist taking some pics. I will be sanding next & then countersink the screw heads as well...enjoy!

That is very nice wood.  I am not familiar with that type of rosewood.  Is it still available & could you tell us who your source is?

Rosewood I am familiar with tends to lighten some as it ages.  The darkness of the Cocobolo rosewood should also gradually fade to be closer to original ES side panels.

Thanks for all the comments Sony guru's!!! "let the ES panels live on"!!!

David: Cocobolo is readily available at local hardwood shops under "exotic woods". This wood is widely used in acoustic guitar building. It is a very "naturally" oily wood & will use alot of sandpaper in the process. Be cautious as the cocobolo dust can be an irrantant & cause sore throats...found that out first hand building a guitar a couple years back.

The pics i took was a rough plained piece of cocobolo with 3 coats of natural tung oil which is available at Lee Valley or any hardware store. I got lucky & was able to hand pick this piece out myself, alot of shops may not be down with that!

Once i trim up the back & bottoms to match the dimensions of the player, i will sand up to about 1000-1200 grit. Each coat of tung oil will darken the complexion of the wood, so with the natural oil of cocobolo i may just leave the wood natural or use 1 coat of tung oil til i get the color i'm looking for.

Cocobolo is close to the prized Brazilian rosewood which is almost un-attainable now a days & if so, the cost is un-godly! The rosewood venner on the side of our ES players reminds me of that particular wood more than any other. I find the most popular wood of choice, east indian rosewood  has more of a chocolate appreance these days...older growth had some nice brownish -orange colorations that were very sweet!
