I thought that the price was too good to pass up.  Yesterday I picked up a 3rd DVP-NS999ES, this time for $100.00.

Now I have 1 silver (bought new in 2004) & 2 black NS999ES units.

I will primarily use them for SACD & I fear that SACD players might not be available for many more years.  Now I have a reserve of players that should last a long time.

This unit works perfectly & only has a couple of minor scratches on the top cover.  It was the last ES unit that the seller had, he switched over to Rotel.

The CD laser has 566 hours use, DVD laser 1735 hours on use.  The 2nd unit that I bought about 1 month ago has 360 hours on the CD laser & 566 hours on the DVD laser.

Does anybody know what expected laser life should be?

I put my mint condition 999ES back in it's box in my closet when I got my new Sony 550 Blu-Ray Player last Christmas.

How do you check the Laser Usage Hours that you mentioned in your post?

You must use caution, this information will get you into the Test mode.  The wrong command could cause you problems.

The unit needs to be connected to a monitor and be in standby (off) mode.

Press the , , [I/O :c8687e53] keys on the remote commander in this order with the power of main unit in OFF status, and the Test Mode starts, then “DIAG START” will be displayed
on the fluorescent display tube and the "Test Mode Menu" will be displayed on the TV screen.

Press for the "Emergency History" menu, this menu displays the screen with laser hours.  Press the key to exit this menu, then the [I/O :c8687e53] key to exit the test Mode.
