Linear PCM-M10 Audio Recorder - File naming

I'm using a new PCM M10 handehled audio recording device. File names generated by the device are numeric and generic, ie, 100712_001.WAV, or 100725_002.MP3, etc.

After copying files to my Mac computer, I rename the files. However when the file is opened the old numeric name remains in the file window and all "meta" data within the file. The "new" preferred name only shows up in the Finder list window. This could create a number of issues with file management.

I have not experienced this with any other similar audio device. What is the catch with this? Is there a workaround? Why would this happen?
