A Sony Rep told me the end of August, but then retracted and said early September. This conversation was 2 days ago.

I spoke to my Sound

I spoke to my Sound Advice rep in Orlando Florida. He says that they expect delivery of the 40xbr800 on Sept 2. I've waited this long. I can wait one more month for the LARGEST direct view TV with 16:9 V-compression AND DVI(!)...you gotta wait!!!

I have to agree with

I have to agree with skyehill. I too owned a pioneer elite 58 pro (native 16:9). But I much prefer watching 4:3 cable on my 40xbr700 (native 4:3 with 16:9 v-compression). I am a huge sports fan and I really disliked watching basketball on the Elite, even though it does one of the best image correcti...

For me, having had what

For me, having had what was claimed to be one of the best 16:9 tvs (I know it's a Pioneer and thus it's apples and oranges, but the thing cost $7000 without a HDTV tuner) and now owning a 40xbr700...these two facts hold true:
1) a 4:3 set displays 4:3 content perfectly.
2) a Sony 4:3 set wit...

Simon, I buy just about all

Simon,
I buy just about all my toys from Sound Advice in Orlando (actually Altamonte Springs). At present they expect to sell the 40xbr800 for $3000. Usually every few months they have an in-house 10% off sale to previous customers. Obviously, I will not be waiting that long!
BTW, I did not ...

Simon, I've seen that stand with

Simon,
I've seen that stand with the 700 on it. Actually, I'm really considering it. It seems to add a tad more elegance than than the Sony stand. I'm also considering something with maple because of my maple Klipsch RF5 fronts and maple RB3 rears. Thanks for the tip with Crutchfield, but since ...

prozac4us, you are absolutely correct. And

prozac4us,
you are absolutely correct. And you have purchased a great set. Never said you made a bad decision. However, since you brought up the question as to why "people are preferring the 36", folks like Ckolsen, skyehill, myself and others are telling you why (in my case I'm out for the 40, ...

Will, Did you mean instead that

Will,
Did you mean instead that Circuit City had the 40xbr700 out instead of the 800? I know the 36xbr800 has been released.

I currently own the 40xbr700

I currently own the 40xbr700 with the standard sony stand, and will be getting the 800. I will most likely get new stand and I too am in the hunt. Here are the stand requirements that I am looking for this beast:
1) height between 18 and 22 inches. No more than 22, but my preference is leaning t...

Warren, I really have not

Warren,
I really have not found anything as of yet. I was looking at some glass top pieces (I like the look), but knowing the weight of the beast scares me a bit. I like the Bell'O AVSC-2050MC from Big Bang Electronics that you posted a lot, but it is just not quite deep enough. Simon also poste...
