[Interview conducted by Sony.net] In March 2009, Tetsuo Urabe of Sony's Display Device Development Group and three others received the 55th Okochi Memorial Award. These awards are presented to individual researchers and business organizations that have made major contributions to the field of production engineering, including the development of production technology, and the implementation of advanced production methods. The award received by Urabe and his colleagues was in recognition of their work relating to the development and mass-production of the world's first OLED television.
Sony has earned widespread acclaim for its success in the development and mass-production of the world's first OLED television, which follows earlier development successes---the Super Top Emission structure for OLED panels, and the active matrix OLED display.

Sony (NYSE:SNE) expects its holiday sales to be poor. That is terrible news for the consumer electronics and PC industries. Sony is a nearly perfect proxy for those sectors. It sells PCs, video games, TV screens, and digital cameras. Many of Sony's competitors will have to gird for another harsh holiday selling season, unless the forecast from the big Japanese firm is based on a large drop in market share across most of its businesses.
Sir Howard Stringer, Sony's CEO, was quoted by Reuters as saying "There hasn’t been that turning point that many had hoped for. We are waiting for a signal that hasn’t arrived."

Earlier today, website Scrawl stumbled upon what appears to be an unintentional first glimpse at a major PS3 firmware update. The somewhat tiny images Scrawl found buried, yet publicly accessible on Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's website, seem to hint at native Facebook integration on the console, along with the ability to change "gamer card" colors (as if the current friends list wasn't obnoxious enough) and view thumbnails of photos in a grid layout.
The images are still up as of this posting, but we'd imagine Sony will be pulling them before too long -- legit or not. After all, these could simply be mock-ups of design ideas meant for internal eyes only, just ... bungled. The one element that isn't design-related, the Facebook settings subsection of User Accounts, has us thinking there's a higher than average chance these aren't simple mock-ups, but rather the result on a Sony slip-up.

Sony News: Sony Charges $25 to Rent Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Early

Sony has announced that fans will be able to watch the animated movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" a full month before its DVD/Blu-ray release on their Bravia HDTV sets (with networking capabilities).
The price of this privilege is $24.95, which Sony argues is a good deal considering the early access and that it's cheaper than taking the entire family to the movie theater.
Renting the film a few weeks later means that fans can get it from Netflix or Blockbuster for a fraction of the price. When you compare Sony's deal to Redbox, which is $1 per night, then the whole thing looks even more ridiculous. It would be cheaper to just buy the movie on DVD, but apparently some people would rather pay an extra $20 to see "Cloudy" early.

[From destructoid.com site] A few weeks ago, we ran a rumor that said Killzone 3 was in development for a 2010 release. Now the rumor has gained more ground with a Guerrilla's animation director allegedly confirming the game and stating that it could indeed be ready by next year.
Jan-Bart Van Beek is quoted as saying that Killzone 3 is in the works right now and they're currently looking at a 2011 release date, with a 2010 launch entirely possible. Beek says that Sony is not pressuring the team for a 2010 release, so it's a case of the game being ready when it's ready, I guess.

The Xbox 360 won't be the only console with streaming Netflix capabilities for much longer, as Sony and Netflix today revealed that the PlayStation 3 will begin providing a similar service as soon as this November. Just a little over a year after the service first came to Xbox Live Gold members, Netflix subscribers will be able to access streaming content from their accounts from PS3's as well.
"Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system," announced a press release this morning that was posted to the PlayStation Blog.

Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, the biggest contract manufacturer of electronics in the world, will produce liquid crystal display TVs and game consoles for Sony in mainland China, said a senior executive of the firm, media in Taiwan reported.
Hon Hai will produce, sell and distribute an estimated 2 million Sony LCD TVs and 4 million game consoles in 2010.

Sony News: Sony unveils Incredible prototype 360 degree 3D with Video

The display offers an impressive image and doesn't require glasses. It's just a prototype now.
The only problem (for now) is what would you do with it? Many TV shows still haven't even switched to HD image how long it'll take for full 3D (not to mention just the pop-up 3D the glasses produce). That alone sets this probably decades away from any practical use in that application which leaves niche markets, video games, and possibly PCs.
Of course as we learned from Blu-ray Sony isn't opposed to pushing brand new tech into commercial acceptance through the Playstation brand so I wouldn't be surprised if the first applications we see out of this would be a PS branded product of some sort(still probably at least 2-3 Gens down the line)
Regardless it is quite exciting tech, but as always sony's tech is usually too far ahead of the learning curve to be used in a timely manner. Here's looking forward to the 3D tech war of 2035!!!

Playstation expanding to Latin America specifically Brazil. This is great news for Brazilian gamers. I guess if you have to start somewhere in South American, you might as well go with the biggest country. Not sure when in November but it's just in time for the holidays. Maybe Sony is starting to feel the pinch and is going to expand to other markets in order to regain control vs XBOX/WII. I think it's a great idea and look forward to having the PS3 expand to other countries.

Transfers 60 Watts of electrical power over a distance of 50cm
Sony Corporation today announced the development of a highly efficient wireless power transfer system that eliminates the use of power cables from electronic products such as television sets. Using this system, up to 60 Watts of electrical energy can be transferred over a distance of 50cm (at an efficiency of approximately 80%, approximately 60% including rectifier).
This new wireless power transfer system incorporates a form of contactless electrical energy transmission technology based on magnetic resonance. With magnetic resonance, electromagnetic energy is only transferred to recipient devices that share the identical resonant frequencies as the energy source, so energy transfer efficiency is maintained, even when misalignment occurs. Furthermore, even if there are metal objects located between the transmitter and receiver, no heat induction occurs.
