Sony PSP: How Sony Can Save the PSPgo
Posted by claudio on Sunday, November 08, 2009 @ 19:44:23 EST (161 reads)
Sony PSP With slow launch sales in Japan, Sony could be facing some trouble with the PSPgo. Here's how things could improve.

The latest addition to the PlayStation Portable family, the PSPgo, hit North American retailers in October with Japanese markets following this week. While reports of the domestic release have been varied and official sales statistics have yet to be released, news out of Japan this week further compound suspicions that the handheld is off to a slow start. According to PSPgo launch sales in Japan, retailers were only able to move 28,275 units, a relatively mediocre start for a country where Sony is king. Given the PSPgo's weak start in its native country, could Sony's rough start in Japan be the start of a less-than-optimal lifecycle for their all-digital handheld? We'll have to wait and see, but if things do start to go south for the PSPgo, Sony may be able to save the system from the flames with a few strategic changes.

Sony PSP: Hands On with Sony's New PlayStation Portable 3000
Posted by claudio on Thursday, October 16, 2008 @ 22:34:42 EDT (1477 reads)
Sony PSP Sony's new re-brushed and buffed-up PlayStation Portable3000 handheld video game system should finally be dangling from plastic retail hooks or resting in neat little rectangle stacks on shelves as you read this, but should existing PSP owners think about upgrading? The PSP 3000 is basically a point update to the PSP "Slim and Lite," Sony's lighter, faster, slimmer refresh that arrived in September 2007. Recall that the original PSP debuted in March 2005, so we certainly weren't due for an update this soon, but an update we're getting, and one that includes a brighter, faster LCD display, expanded video-out, and a built-in microphone.

Nearly 14 million US gamers already own Sony's portable PlayStation, roughly half as many as own a Nintendo DS, which considering the PSP's current baseline price -- $170 to the DS's easier to swallow $130 -- is certainly a respectable feat. No one knows how many original PSP owners dropped $170 on the "Slim and Lite" last year, but if you (like me) were one of them, you're probably wondering whether it's worth another $170 simoleons or not.

Sony PSP: Sony unveils improved PlayStation Portable
Posted by claudio on Tuesday, September 02, 2008 @ 16:33:25 EDT (1351 reads)
Sony PSP Sales are improving in Japan for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation Portable handheld video game machine, and a beefed up version with a clearer display is expected to add momentum, a senior executive said Tuesday.

The portable game machine faces tough competition from Nintendo DS — the handheld machine from the Japanese manufacturer of Pokemon and Super Mario games. Nintendo also has a big hit in the Wii home console that's battering Sony's PlayStation 3 in sales.

Sony PSP: Skype coming to the PSP
Posted by claudio on Wednesday, January 02, 2008 @ 16:17:22 EST (1664 reads)
Sony PSP Skype, a free internet communications program, is coming to the PSP according to CES news on Sony's website.

No specifics were given, but Sony indicated that PSP gamers would be able to use the VoIP service to "call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances."

It is uncertain how Skype will fit in with previously announced plans for the PSP's "Go! Messenger" service developed in conjunction with BT. Go! Messenger will offer video calls, instant messaging, voice chat and voice messaging.
