Sony PSP: OP-ED: It's Too Soon for a PlayStation Vita Price Cut

Sony's new handheld hasn't been off to a great start here or in Japan.
PlayStation Vita has now been available for two months in North America and Europe, and twice as long in Japan. In that time it's failed to make any sort of significant splash as far as sales go -- in Japan, where we receive weekly updates courtesy of Media Create, the system sold less than 9,000 units in each of the first two weeks this month, and it wasn't as if it was doing gangbusters prior to that. Software has done poorly as well, rarely making the top 50 sales charts in Japan; in the U.S., only MLB 12 has been seen in the NPD's top 10, and that is with sales of the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions being combined. All of the Vita's games are also available through the PlayStation Store, so it is unfair to judge the performance of software purely on sales charts that only account for retail. The amount of hardware that has been moved so far, however, does feel like cause for concern.

Sony PSP: Sony's PlayStation Vita hits stores in Japan

Sony's long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine hit stores in Japan this weekend as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up to be among the first to buy it.
Sony Computer Entertainment is predicting brisk sales, even though the launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business. Sony projects a loss of more than $1 billion for the fiscal year through March 2012, which would be its fourth straight annual loss.

Sony PSP: Hands on: Sony PlayStation Vita

After Nintendo's announcement of the Wii U, one would think that Sony's new handheld gaming device, the PSVita, would have to come with a rotating disco ball attached in order to get any attention. But the successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) has not had any trouble wowing attendees at this week's E3 convention in LA, impressing journalists with its sleek design, sheer processing power, and promising line-up of launch titles.
Like Sony's handhelds that came before it, PSVita looks and feels sexy. The surprisingly light-weight console, which feels even lighter than the original PSP, strikes the perfect balance between a super-sleek gloss and matte finish, with a monstrous 5-inch OLED screen that displays the most stunning graphics ever seen on a portable gaming device. And despite its lightness, it feels incredibly solid - the buttons and body are sturdy and the machine itself is quiet - a far cry from the PSP with its rackety UMD slot and the PSP Go, which felt flimsy and ready to snap if gripped too tightly.

Sony PSP: Why the Next Generation Portable may be the end of consoles as we know them

The past week has taught me one thing: Never ever leave for vacation. The one week of the year I leave for Orlando, and Sony releases all sorts of news on its upcoming handheld system, codenamed Next Generation Portable. Some of the rumors and leaks seemed to be dead on: 5-inch touchscreen OLED and two analog sticks. On top of that, there were a few surprises I didn’t expect: The rear touchpad is intriguing along with the GPS capabilities.
The device’s high-tech wizardry underscores a major point about the upcoming generation of handhelds: They blur the lines separating consoles and portable. Not since the Sega Nomad has this been so apparent. It’s not the holy grail for video games — a universal system — but these handhelds bring us a major step closer.

Sony PSP: Sony Patents Fuel PSP2, PSP Phone Speculation

Eight patent applications filed last fall by Sony have fueled speculation that a dual-screen device with a two-finger trackpad is just around the corner.
Filed by the Sony Computer Entertainment of America back in October 2009 and published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week, some of the patents reference a "handheld device with two-finger touch triggered selection," others refer to a "predictive layout" screen, and most claim the possibility of a dual-screen device where the touchpad is separate from the main screen.

Sony PSP: Rumor: Sony Gearing Up for PSP2 Launch
|

Sony may finally be preparing to launch its successor to the PSP.
NetherRealm Studios is apparently not the only company currently working with a PSP2. Sony may have sent out PSP2 development kits "across the industry" according to sources at Develop.
While a developer or two working with the PSP2 to get a handle on it isn't necessarily that big of a deal, the entire industry working with it means that an announcement or launch is getting closer. Though the digital-download only PSPgo was released in late 2009, few would say it was a true successor to the original PSP launched in Japan in late 2004.

Sony PSP: Sony PSP2 Might Get Back-Facing Touch Pad

According to Eurogamer, Sony is in the process of designing a new version of their Playstation Portable (PSP) handheld gaming system. Now, that in itself isn't all that surprising; we've heard rumors of a PSP2 regularly since about a month after the PSP first launched. And we've seen both iterations (PSP-2000, PSP-3000) and new form factors (PSPGo) but the basic game-playing internals have stayed the same (with the major exception of the PSPGo ditching support for physical media). But Eurogamer is talking about a true new generation of the PSP, and what makes this particular rumor more interesting than most is that they claim to have spoken to three different developers who've seen an early prototype behind closed doors (presumably at Gamescom though they don't confirm that). All three developers are describing the same unusual feature: a touch pad on the back of the unit.

Sony PSP: Sony Rumor: Sony PSP2 is '****ing Powerful'

Hey, it's another PSP2 rumor that's probably wrong, but if you want the latest scuttlebutt from the usual unnamed "sources," here it is, unvarnished.
According to VG247, Sony's powerhouse portable sequel won't be revealed at E3 next month, but it is in the wild, and the NDAs as flying fast and furious.
Did I say 'nondisclosure agreement'? Nonsense, say all the "sources" leaking like paper grease bags. Will the PSP2 have cameras? Yes, they say. Two. One in front, one in back. Just like the DSi, in other words.

Sony PSP: Rumor: Sony developing PSP phone to challenge iPhone

In terms of sales, Sony's PSP has been getting trounced by the various incarnations of Nintendo's DS since day one. Despite the PSP's better graphics and flexibility as a mobile media platform, the DS has grabbed hold of the handheld gaming market and shows no sign of letting go.
Since the introduction of the App Store in 2008, a new mobile gaming juggernaut has emerged, seemingly out of nowhere -- the iPhone/iPod touch. With the forthcoming launch of the iPad, whose larger screen and more powerful CPU could make it a gaming powerhouse, it means there are now three very big players in the mobile gaming market... and Sony is in an untenable position already.

Sony PSP: Sony rumored to be relaunching cheaper PSPgo
|

Sony might be about to re-release the PSPgo at a lower price point. It’s only a rumor, but one that’s easy to believe based on the dismal performance of the PSPgo since launch.
The news comes from Gamervision who has heard from a source close to Sony that a relaunch is “imminent”. It will be coupled with a new marketing campaign and a new price to help encourage uptake of the device.
Whatever Sony does will need to include a better deal for retailers who saw no value in the PSPgo beyond the small profit margin of selling the actual device. As all games are digital and sold by Sony there were no more sales beyond the hardware for anyone other than Sony.
original $249 price tag, non-removable
